There were times when you could not understand God anymore. You had to speak against God. Then I saw that this was what really happens in the Psalms and in Job. Out of this I learned the difference between petition and lament.. . . In Russian prison camp one time we stood in a circle to have a worship service. One of us was asked to pray. He read Psalm 103. We were standing with our heads bowed, stooped over. But afterward I thought, "That's not the way to praise God! Such a psalm has to be spoken with joy, your head raised,
your body erect!" In that experience I learned the difference between real praise and our notion of prayer. Then I began my dissertation, writing on a little board, sometimes trading bread for paper. It was then that I discovered that the psalms of the Old Testament really come out of human experience.

wow. that's dedication to writing a dissertation (referring to claus westermann trading bread for paper; he wrote on "the praise of god in the psalms")

My review of Jennifer Brown Jones' book "Translation and Style in the Old Greek Psalter: What Pleases Israel's God" has been published by RBL. My verdict: An important contribution to the study of literary features in LXX texts and moves the conversation forward.

While I ultimately reached different conclusions about the righteous and the wicked, his books provided the impetus for my doctoral research, and thus my first book. I am grateful for his example of excellent biblical scholarship in service of the church. 2/2

I am sad to hear of the passing of Old Testament scholar Gordon Wenham. While I never had the honor of meeting him, he served as a silent "mentor" as a major influence in my research. I remember coming across his Psalms as Torah during the writing of my Master's thesis on ethics in the Psalter. 1/2

Light of Christ Anglican Church

I am on a committee to hire a full-time Worship & Women's Ministry Pastor at TLCDenver.com. This is an amazing, diverse Anglican church (ACNA) in Denver. We're looking for someone with a pastoral calling who can also lead worship. Please reach out or share if you know someone!

This is wonderful! I'm really looking forward to your book, and I am very interested in how Wright will respond. Graciously, of course (he is so kind), but I am curious how he will respond theologically.

I am excited to have received my author copies of my first book, Semantics and Poetics of the Righteous and the Wicked in the Psalms. This book started as my dissertation at McMaster Divinity College. The idea stemmed from reading about ethics in the psalms. 1/5

I think this book will appeal if you are interested in the Psalterβ€”there are several new readings of individual psalms withinβ€”or if your area is Hebrew semantics. It would be a huge help if you are interested to request your library purchase the book if you are a faculty, student, or alumni! 5/5

I thus focused on the linguistic features of the terms for "righteous" and "wicked" in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, in addition to looking carefully at the ways the two figures are utilized poetically. I looked closely at the psalms where both occur to show the creativity in their uses. 4/5

Instead, I noticed that the main ways they are characterized in the psalms is through their antagonism toward each other. Unlike in Proverbs, where the righteous flourish, the most common (though not exclusive) feature of the righteous in the psalms is that they suffer. 3/5

One scholar referred to the righteous and the wicked as the "chief" way the psalms taught ethics. But as I read about these figures, I could not see clear evidence of direct ethical teaching. The righteous and wicked figures had little to do with specific actions that were praised or condemned. 2/5

I am grateful for audiobooks on topics I care about for my long-ish commute, but it is clear that most audiobook narrators have no theological background. The church father "Oregon" featured significantly in today's chapter. I knew my love for the Northwest and theology went hand-in-hand.

What are people reading these days on higher education? Articles and books (not textbooks) are most welcome recommendations, especially those related to alternative pedagogy.
