Oh good lord

Member of Parliament for Calder Valley, Health and Social Care Select Committee Member, mediocre fell runner - never knowingly on message.
Oh good lord
24.07.2025 10:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This week on the health and social care select committee we questioned Wes Streeting on the 10 year plan. Hear I am questioning him about future training routs for doctors and flexibility of medical training.

Drop an email to the address you get when you google me. We do hold surgeries including at weekends
15.07.2025 16:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Lord Darzi said that the NHS was in critical condition but the vital signs are good. Medical training is a brilliant example of this. COVID knocked our health services back, but itβs good to see the evidence is getting better.
Disclaimer - before being an MP I worked at the GMC
However there are still the specialties where unwanted sexual comments remain too high (surgery why is it always you?)
And a stubbornly high number of doctors donβt feel confident reporting discrimination
Those at high or moderate risk of burn out remains too high, but the number is thankfully droppingβ¦
15.07.2025 15:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0More doctors are accessing flexible working in their training, with almost 2/3 of newly qualified doctors being women itβs important training reflects a world where people have more complex lives.
15.07.2025 15:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Trainers are more likely to say they have time to devote to training - with that number increasing for the last few years and having gone up 4pp this year. Trainers also feel positive about the support they get from their local education team (but numbers are lower in for GPs)
15.07.2025 15:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The NHS has always been a good place to train but trainee doctors satisfaction in their training dropped during the pandemic and plateaued since. However across all questions on quality satisfaction is improving
15.07.2025 15:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Today the @gmcuk.bsky.social launch their national training survey. The surveys of 50,637 doctors in training and 21,289 trainers can be a canary in the coal mine to tell us the state of the NHS. Here is a thread of 6 charts and what they tell us about the state of the health services
15.07.2025 15:47 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0One area that I have been working on since my election is campaigning to end the presumption of contact in family courts which gives abusers access to their children. Too frequently the voices of abusers are heard over the voices of children. I pushed the minister further on this today.
08.07.2025 12:27 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I was a signatory to the amendment that protected benefits for current recipients and gained commitments to coproduction of the new system from the despatch box. If you want MPs to negotiate on the basis of their vote donβt attack them for using that vote to support the improved package they got.
07.07.2025 09:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 8 π 0A simple slogan but not true. The point I was making!
07.07.2025 08:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 4 π 0Annoyingly thatβs more frequently legal avoidance not none legal evasion. Not to say it canβt be tackled but the above is a good example as to how loopholes get created. We should close loopholes, but my broader point stands - more complex than a slogan.
07.07.2025 08:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I have had someone stop me in the street and complain that we donβt tax business enough, before complaining about the business tax their cooperative pays. Tax is more complex than slogans.
07.07.2025 08:14 β π 33 π 3 π¬ 16 π 4π’ @joshfg.bsky.social calls it an βincredibly painfulβ decision to break the whip for the first time, but warns loyal MPs have been forced into an "impossible positionβ.

23.04.2025 15:58 β π 2 π 2 π¬ 2 π 1I have already made clear my concerns about the impact of the proposed benefit changes announced in the spring statement.
Today in treasury questions I asked specifically about the estimated increase in child poverty the changes will cause and how the government will tackle that.
I was proud to stand alongside members of parliament from multiple parties with our colleagues Abtisam Mohammed and @yuanfenyang.bsky.social

This morning in foreign office questions I raised the impact of the Trump administrations reckless cuts to USAID on the global fight against HIV and AIDS.
01.04.2025 17:39 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Today in parliament I put on record some of my concerns about proposed changes to disability benefits. I understand and hear the very real fears and concerns of constituents about the impact of getting this wrong and will work to ensure vulnerable constituents get the support they deserve.
27.03.2025 12:57 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 4 π 0On Monday I took part in an adjournment debate on Domestic Abuse. I asked victims minister Alex Davis-Jones for assurances that the government will act on the current presumption of contact rules that exist even in the case of abusers.
19.03.2025 12:57 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Great to join the Better, Safer Maternity Services & 10-Year Health Plan event in Parliament today!
With a baby born in the UK every 56 seconds and many set to live into the next century, prioritising maternity care is important for our future.

Today Parliament passed the Rare Cancers Bill. This will lead to more focus for developing rare cancer drugs. In my job I have the privilege of turning personal grief into change. I did that today speaking about losing my brother Alex to a rare cancer earlier this year.
