Great thread by @pwgtennant.bsky.social about PPI in methodological research.

In my view, people are too hung up on what the 'PP' stands for. Yes, Patients and/or the Public are often the end users of research ... but sometimes they're not!
Were it called 'End-User Involvement' it'd be much better.

Hot tip. Calling me eminent and/or esteemed in an unsolicited email makes me less likely, not more, to want to accept your conference invite. It is possible this may be a British thing.

Perhaps (if I had the time, which I really don't) I would do a deep dive like this on another study to show how random the last digit looked, or how non periodic the data, and praise the authors of that study for sharing. With stories like this I also want to emphasise positives of data sharing.

Well yes, they should. But people being people, some lack confidence and will fear exposure of an inadvertent mistake. Whatever happened here didn't look inadvertent. Important to be clear on that, and that typically data sharing provides reassurance in findings, not negative exposure.

Sadly I fear this will make even honest researchers less ready to upload data.

You can do that each and every morning. But by 8am you need to put the tantrum away and just get on with things.

This! Fancy web interfaces let you explore the data, but they are not the same as sharing the data. You can do both!

Large-scale GWAS meta-analysis of serum antibody levels reveals distinct genetic architectures Antibodies are the principal effector proteins of humoral immunity. Dysregulated antibody production is a feature of a number of heritable immune-mediated diseases, such as the antibody deficiencies a...

New: GWAS of serurm antibody levels. Interesting findings include genetically correlated traits with hard-to-find shared causal variants, and apparently genetically uncorrelated traits sharing causal variants that operate in inconsistent directions www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

This is a perennial issue with grant applications. They want to support blue sky, ground breaking research, but do not want to maintain the useful tools that result from such research. Science cannot build and grow without sustaining our foundations.

What bad things happen if she explodes? Even if reform are polling at 30% I refuse to believe that many people here are racists. Let her explode. Horrible that we have an MP like this. But better reveal her true colours so she can be voted out than let these racists hide in plain sight.

I don't want to live in a culturally homogeneous cul de sac. Britain depends on imported labour and will continue to do so given demographics. This enriches us, and I am grateful to those who leave homes at personal cost. Media, politicians instead respond with disparagement and threats. Appalling.

The labour response is that my mum, my friends, my work colleagues who happen to be born outside the UK must contribute "more than they take" in order to stay. The government needed to show backbone. To defend the rights *already earned* by those who already contribute by their very presence. /2

You never know which straw will break the camel's back. This, it turns out, is mine. The Tory shadow home sec gives a frankly racist statement about deporting people here legally in order that we have a mostly "culturally homogeneous" population. Just horrific. /1

Given Lam's appalling comments, the UK government needs to make it free for those with permanent leave to remain to obtain British citizenship, to promote people making the change, and to make it quicker.

They need to do that to remove understandable anxiety.

A place to collate information which isn't subject to institutional whims. If I want to connect with a potential collaborator, their website tells me about their work, their team, their priorities. Unfortunately, mine says "too busy lately to update"...

Agree. But if you are one of their target audience it doesn't seem that way. Target audience =both people who agree already/persuadable, and people who fear they will be deported. I do believe these statements intended to cause stress and uncertainty to those already here and working in our society.

Due to "insufficient review". I haven't read the papers, but I would be somewhat miffed as an author for a retraction on that basis. I would hope for at least a right to reply and present the biological rationale that is now deemed missing.

πŸ“£Preprint alert - a tricky one, as there are no significant results (and we all know null-results are hard to publish)

We tried to replicate findings in cell lines and mouse model using 3 Mendelian Randomization approaches, but failed.

After a degree in maths, I got interested in statistics, took a PhD in mathematical genetics/infectious disease epi depending on your viewpoint (principles of both are highly mathematical), and now use genetics to understand cause and potential treatment for immune mediated diseases. /End

[Scene is ANCIENT GREECE - where SOCRATES and PLATO and others are sitting round, thinking]

1
SOCRATES:
Plato..

PLATO:
Yes Socrates?

2
SOCRATES:
Can you tell me, are you human?

PLATO:
Why… yes, Socrates

3
SOCRATES:
And would you agree, Plato, that a human knows what a chariot is?

PLATO:
Um, yep

4
SOCRATES:
So you can tell me, then

5
[Socrates produces a papyrus, showing a drawing of the corner of a chariot wheel]

SOCRATES:
*Is that a chariot*?

6
PLATO:
Well
that’s more just a bit of wheel

7
SOCRATES:
So not a *chariot*.

PLATO:
No.

8
SOCRATES:
[Producing another papyrus with the full drawing of the chariot, chopped into boxes]

So if a man were challenged to β€œtap the boxes containing chariots to prove you’re human” when he was just trying to check his ClubCard points... *where could he tap*?

9
PLATO:
Well you can’t tap any of them really

10
SOCRATES:
So are we not human?

PLATO:
β€˜Spose not.

11
[Bleak pause]

12
PLATO:
I’ll get the hemlock

SOCRATES:
Yeah

[ends]

Dunno. Loss of my data has happened so often now it's barely my data anymore. But when all of acme fridge corporation's fridges turn off, the company might be more likely to pay the ransom. Certainly less likely to sell me another fridge once they let my food rot through poor security.
