Hello, my name is Nickala Squire. I paint creatures! Wild animals, commissioned pet portraits and the occasional whimsical critter or skull. My primary mediums is acrylic, on canvas board or real, preserved leaves.

Reasons to [not love] [not fear] Respect Cassowaries
Cassowaries are large flightless birds native to rainforests. Their ancestors likely lived alongside dinosaurs.
Males are the sole caregivers for young. Raising them can take a year.
These birds disperse seeds from the fruit they eat. Many plants and trees canโ€™t germinate without them!
Cassowaries arenโ€™t afraid to defend themselves with powerful jump kicks using their sharp inner toe.

At the bottom right there is a silly simple sketch of a cassowary holding a knife saying "fight me!"

A translucent silvery-white coyote jumps in the air, surrounded by little glowy orbs, on a semi abstract forest background of desaturated maroon-purple and navy blue sky.

Reasons to love coyotes
- Coyotes are a โ€œkeystone species.โ€
- Theyโ€™re vital to the health of entire ecosystems thanks to keeping rodent populations under control. This means fewer pests (like ticks!) and thriving vegetation.
- Despite persecution, coyotes are incredibly resilient and adaptable as a species.
- Watching coyotes socialize is like watching a dramatic Shakespearean play!

This originally started as a no-pressure experimental piece that I didn't want to allow my perfectionism to take too seriously. But then I began adding the coyote's fur texture and had to be deliberate because I love fur texture and I love coyotes.
