The dread is indifferent to man’s ability to be involved. Man becomes disempowered. It’s the biological monkey brain fear of no longer being on top of the food chain.

And there’s nothing you can do about it.

The reason it’s scary is because it makes the audience feel insignificant. It’s not that the entity is Big or All Powerful (tm). It’s that no matter what, human kind, and its ability to perceive the dread or fight back against the dread, or document the dread does nothing.

I think what a lot of contemporary horror that focuses on eldritch, cosmic or lovecraftian specific dread forget about is the overwhelming amount of indifference the dread has for humanity.
