Stoltenberg and Merkel were not alone. We had an ardent need in Europe to believe that Russia was heading to a peaceful neighbour. We needed 2025 and Trump to start seeing Ruscism. Still today a lot of people can't see it.

Its simply a lack of strategic options from Stoltenberg and probably NATO. It's a sandbox argument.

In other words NATO was not ready to help in an intelligent way.

Former NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg writes in his memoirs he refused President Zelensky's February 2022 request for a no-fly zone over Ukraine because NATO would have had to strike Russian air defenses in Belarus and Russia, risking direct war. He called ending that phone call painful.
