He had a fairly astounding following in the 1840s especially, when his performance tours were accompanied by a level of enthusiasm we associate with pop stars. He *was* a composer and musician of unusually high caliber--and also a stone hottie.

The Big Book of Science Fiction (that's literally what it's called) that the VanderMeers put out in 2016 comes to mind, though I think they also intentionally picked some more obscure pieces that they thought should get wider readership.

I wondered about that, the few times I've been there (only ever driven through).
I feel certain that a set like that exists somewhere in the world, though. Or at least a theme restaurant.

I'm a little bit younger than you, such that by the 1990s there was some recognition of how fucked up it really was, but I didn't get any validation of that until I went to college (and that was probably because it was Smith). It's harder to push back when no one else is, especially the adults.

Memory is weird. The other day I was in a conversation about the original ending of the Little Shop of Horrors musical, and
I've had βDonβt Feed the Plantsβ stuck in my head ever since. I probably last heard that song in 1985.

It's one of the reasons that "one of the guys" often served me as a defense mechanism--like, if they stop seeing me as a woman, maybe I won't have to deal with this shit.
Didn't work, either.

I keep feeling like this is something libraries could work on, though I'm not sure how (and I no longer work in the field). Because access to multiple distinct subscriptions is already something that a lot of libraries do--through SPL for instance I can read NYT, WaPo, WSJ, and more.

Greece as well. Paint just isn't very durable. But if you go somewhere like Pompeii where they've managed to unearth and preserve things like the Villa of the Mysteries you get a very different picture.
Similarly, the terracotta warriors of Xi'an often still had paint on them when unearthed.
