this one seems more informed than actman's by a lot, but is still kind of caught in the trap that few turns means the game isn't interactive. It's also kind of crazy since yugioh was pretty grindy this year, it's a massive selling point of dracotail and fiendsmith as engines.

In partial honor of the 5 year anniversary, the server did an essay jam where each person had 48 hours to make a complete video from scratch from a prompt.

It's crazy how small things you do can change the course of your life. Sorry that sounds so cheesy, but it's true. Thanks to all of you for making my life better.

However, I didn't really expect to make such close friends through doing it. I'm getting married next month, and a number of people coming to my wedding are friends that I could have only met through there. If I didn't post about making the server, I never would have known many of you.

I attribute most of what I know about what makes a good video essay to lessons I've learned from smarter and wiser people I've met there.

My motives in making it were less than selfless: my own channel wasn't going well at the time, and I wanted a place I could network and learn from people that were better than me at the work.

I don't usually talk much about my role in establishing the community, because I honestly haven't done very much. Every member of that server has been so important in making it what it is, and it's been so fucking cool to see how it's developed.

Today marks 5 years since I founded @theessaylibrary.com, which is a discord server aimed at helping video essayists meet each other and improve their craft. Feel free to make jokes about me being a discord mod, it's fine.
