Started "Still Wakes The Deep" last night.
Expected a walking sim (because The Chinese Room)
Got sucked into a non-stop body horror / 3D platformer with great acting and some decent scares for about four hours.
Whoops!
The way the forcefield molds the rock formation to its shape is so awesome
04.02.2026 23:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Finished it. Was able to get four of the endings.
Guess I'll need to track down a copy of the book!
More of this, please. Sci-fi books being adapted into video games with the focus on exploration, story and mystery.
03.02.2026 23:07 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Started "The Invincible". Every screenshot is like something from an old sci-fi book cover. Big fan of it so far.
03.02.2026 23:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I know there are more critical collectibles that alter the ending and they're less of a pain in the ass to find. But the 50 little blue flowers scattered all over the place in each area can sling their hook and bugger off.
03.02.2026 14:57 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0After ignoring the maps and collectathon stuff, I'm now enjoying the game a lot more. The spear is ridiculously fun to use, and the added use of two einhenjars at once makes for some satisfying combat. Think my highest combo was 913 hits during a side-mission.
03.02.2026 14:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sword of the Sea is a really Lovely time.
Reminds me of Airblade but the feeling of momentum and speed is spot on. Nice touch with the Spyro Year of the Dragon skateboarding trials as well.
A downy woodpecker sits on a spruce on a sunny winter day. "Ahh... Febuary" it says. Close up on it correcting "Febrary" then "Febberary..." then finally "Frebrury"

The music is also on another level.
Here's "THE 'UNFINISHED BATTLE WITH GOD' SYNDROME", which is the name of the normal Battle theme.

Valkyrie Profile is unlike anything I've ever played. From the battle system to the way the story unfolds, it really is no surprise to me that they chose to make Valkyrie Elysium a hack'n'slash affair. It took me a while to understand what I was supposed to do, and the importance of the START button
02.02.2026 03:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have never been infuriated by maps in a video game like this. There are instances where you can't go back to a map, and where you can't even look at maps from other floors that contain collectibles. It's so sloppy that I can't be arsed going through the collectible hunt anymore.

29.01.2026 14:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I wish there was more of a purpose for the combo meter. It's a nice touch but doesn't really add anything mechanical to the game's combat. It just seems to be a throwback to previous games in the series, but I wish there was more to it, like a special attack you can use meter for.
29.01.2026 03:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The Einhenjar system is interesting, I like how summoning affects your attacks/magic. I do wish weapon switching was more flexible, would've made for some good combo stuff.
Performance on PS5 can get absolutely dire when you least expect it, in the same way Drakengard 3 can grind to a halt.

I haven't put time into any of the other Valkyrie Profile games, but I have seen them in play. Elysium feels like the Drakengard 3 of the series in a way, especially Its muddy and cartoonish visuals.
28.01.2026 15:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This gets especially annoying when you're expected to replay some chapters to unlock hidden areas containing items using Einherjar you've found in the main story.
The music is really nice though, especially the first area.
