Content is only part of the reason why the BBC is losing the young – as important are the BBC’s structural disadvantages within the existing digital ecosystem and the way in which our individualized media consumption prioritizes private over public interest

Young people consume most of their media via their phone (on which they spend 4.5+ hours a day), with less than half of 16-24 yr olds even switching on broadcast TV in the average week (Ofcom 2024)

When they’re thinking about what to watch young people are more likely to turn to YouTube, TikTok, or Disney+ than the BBC (BBC is 5th most watched streaming service among 16-24s)

Young adult Britons consume the BBC for only around 3 minutes a day – compared to about 2 hours a day on Google/Alphabet’s services and about an hour on TikTok (Ofcom)

Can Google still justify crawling all online content by fair use and value-added if, rather than providing snippets to promote click-through, it gives people an AI-generated summary? And doesn't the publication of the summary turn it into a publisher (with associated liabilities)?

You’re right, it does date the era of spin and soundbites and make it seem anachronistic. Though is controlled anarchy replicable? Or can only certain people do it successfully?
