The bunker story has now reached The Times.

Great. Please hello to him from me.
30.01.2026 22:06 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Sorry to hear that. Grant showed me round the bunker twice, and he knew *everything*. Great guy. Seems mad that they wouldn't want such people on their team.
30.01.2026 21:28 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I'm not clear on what happened. When I visited I was shown around by Grant, and I thought BQ Restoration Project were in charge. Are they all gone now?
30.01.2026 20:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Anyway, if you're into nuclear stuff, can I recommend my podcast to you? If you don't mind the Glasgow accent? Link is in the bio.
30.01.2026 15:30 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Would you be a good leader of a communal fallout shelter in the event of World War III? Fortunately the US Department of Defense created a self-assessment quiz in the 1970s so that you can "rate yourself as a potential shelter leader"โฆ doomsdaymachines.net/p/take-me-to...
29.01.2026 15:00 โ ๐ 49 ๐ 18 ๐ฌ 7 ๐ 3Yes, that always struck me as weird. I was told once to google the owner. Some unusual news stories about him and a ghost...
30.01.2026 15:22 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0No lift when I was there. It really was just a burnt-out shell. I remember one room stacked high with tyres that had been set alight. They were still working on shifting all the tyres.
30.01.2026 14:47 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Great response to the Supermac series! New one on Monday on the Greenland/Thule Air Base.
Why is the US so interested in Greenland? What role did it play in early warning? And what happened when the US dropped four nukes on the ice??

๐ถEmus in a bunker, I know, I know, it's serious๐ถ
Been singing this all morning to the tune of Girlfriend in a Coma.
I've been here when it was still a burnt-out mess. Had a guide, helmet, lantern, and hi-viz. It was rough inside, and the ground underfoot uneven cos of swirls of melted, then re-hardened, glass - but at least I didn't have to contend with emus.

An original one-sheet color poster for "Dr. Strangelove," featuring the tagline, "The hot-line suspense comedy." The poster features a squadron of gray silhouetted B-52 bombers receding into the background and flying toward the viewer under the title of the film (in a red font), below which are caricatures from the back of the US president and the Soviet premier each holding a red telephone to their ear, a globe featuring a rendition of the US and Soviet flags between them. A woman's bare arm holding an empty wine or cocktail glass is draped over the Soviet premier's left shoulder.
A black and white archival photograph of a large movie theater marquee announcing "Dr. Strangelove."
An archival black and white photograph of Peter Sellers and his soon-to-be wife Britt Ekland standing inside a theater at one of the premieres in front of two large posters for the film. Sellers is wearing a dark overcoat while Ekland is holding flowers and wearing a leopard fur coat.
A full-page black and white advertisement in the January 29, 1964, edition of the New York Daily News for "Dr. Strangelove," featuring six large photographs of individual cast members in a scene from the film, each of them holding a telephone receiver (Sterling Hayden, George C. Scott, Tracy Reed, and three images of Peter Sellers in his three roles, even though Dr. Strangelove never uses a telephone in the film) along with questions about each character (e.g., "Why did Dr. Strangelove want ten women for each man?," and "Where was General 'Buck' Turgidson when the hot-line rang?"
Today in 1964, โDr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bombโ premiered in New York City, Toronto, and London. The original release date of December 12, 1963โand a special New York City preview on November 22, 1963โwere postponed after President Kennedyโs assassination.

Harold Macmillan: Pressing the Button
"In any case, we could get hold of the bomb even if it meant shooting the American officers concerned."
Monday's episode in my Harold Macmillan series looks at how he would have 'pressed the button'. It's a juicy one. Get previous episodes here.
