โ€˜Self-termination is most likelyโ€™: the history and future of societal collapse An epic analysis of 5,000 years of civilisation argues that a global collapse is coming unless inequality is vanquished

Modern humans canโ€™t change course because weโ€™re hard-wired to believe weโ€™re exceptional. Itโ€™s not possible to rip through Earthโ€™s environmental resources at warp speed and avoid extinction.

True, so very true, and as always, it is too often those huge egos that be, that are our true enemy. Humans are really no more important than even the black leopard, who is quite clever at avoiding humans. Maybe he is the wise one!

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best Iโ€™ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.

Russian volcano erupts for first time in centuries after massive earthquake strikes Kamchatka Peninsula Russian volcano erupts after centuries of dormancy, spewing hot ash into sky and triggering 7.0-magnitude earthquake with tsunami warning on Kamchatka Peninsula.

Climate deniers are euphoric! A volcano just erupted. That should buy them another 3โ€“5 years of pretending COโ‚‚ from cars and coal plants isnโ€™t warming the planet.

The marine heat wave in the North Pacific is one of the most extensive, spanning the giant N Pacific, and in spots, the most intense, Iโ€™ve observed. Anomalies near Japan are 15 F (8C) above normal. (Japan just recorded its hottest temp on record.)

Monarch butterfliesโ€™ mass die-off in 2024 caused by pesticide exposure โ€“ study New peer-reviewed research found an average of seven pesticides in each of 10 butterflies tested

Seven pesticides in a single monarch. Pyrethroids, PFAS, runoff cocktails. If this is what we find in the most-monitored butterfly on Earth, imagine whatโ€™s happening to the insects no one tracks or names. This isnโ€™t decline. Itโ€™s erasure.

โ€œThere are currently 1,217 firefighters tackling the Monroe Canyon blaze, according to the Forest Service.โ€

Very much appreciate when journalists take time to ask and report how many people are working a fire.

Helps readers get a sense of the scale.

This city could run dry โ€˜within weeksโ€™ as it grapples with an acute water crisis | CNN Vital reservoirs are shrinking, authorities are scrambling to reduce demand and stave off catastrophe and residents are desperately trying to conserve water.

Tehran is a microcosm of whatโ€™s unfolding globally: drought, climate change, and decades of water mismanagement. A city of 10 million may soon run dry. As drinkable water vanishes, megacity collapse is becoming the new normal.

Four global maps showing near-surface air temperature anomalies for the month of August in 1985-1994, 1995-2004, 2005-2014, and 2015-2024. Most all areas are observing long-term warming, which is largest over the Arctic region and Asia. Anomalies are calculated relative to 1951-1980 from ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis.

Built on Coal, Powered by Sun: Chinaโ€™s New Future - EV Curve Futurist Chinaโ€™s coal buildout is a short-term bufferโ€”not a long-term plan. This blog unpacks why renewables will soon render new coal plants obsolete.

Ever mention Chinaโ€™s insane solar, EV & battery growthโ€”only to hear: โ€œBut theyโ€™re building coal plants faster than anyone!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‘ Same. So I wrote this:
๐Ÿ“‰ 85% of new coal projects = rejected in 2024
๐Ÿ”ฅ Most new ones = peakers, not lifelines
โšก Storage is exploding
Itโ€™s not a buildoutโ€”itโ€™s a coal phaseout.

Very complete article, wish more would understand what is taking place in various countries, and that there is still some hope we can limit GHGs, and perhaps limit temp increase. US really is behind many countries in terms of progress, but then, they are one great big oil country, and are addicts!

Rasmus Jarlov on Twitter writes: "There is nothing to celebrate. Moving from average tariffs of less than 2% on trade between the USA and Europe to 15% under todayโ€™s deal will inevitably lead to inflation. Almost everything will become more expensive in both Europe and the USA, and we will all be worse off. The economic illiteracy in the White House is doing serious damage to the West."

Stylish Skunk replies: "I have a feeling you have 0 idea what you're talking about.

In fact I know you do."

Rasmus Jarlov responds: "Of course. I am former minister of trade in Denmark and you are an anonymous Twitter profile. You probably know a lot more than me. For sure."

It's official. 2025 is now the third worst wildfire year on record in Canada. A study from 2018 examining fire-regime changes in Canada over the prior 57 years showed the fire season had been starting approximately one week earlier and ending one week later. Probably longer now.
