Joined by Nigel Topping, Lord Marvin Rees & Adam Elman.
Huge thanks to Mott MacDonald & Alan Hendry for leading on low-carbon innovation! π±
β‘ Tuesday: Ben joined Earth Setβs panel - βWinners, Losers & Whatβs Next on the Road to Net Zeroβ - alongside Emily Nurse (Climate Change Committee) &
@cleanpowerdave.bsky.social (Ember).
Thanks to Earth Set for a passionate & informed discussion. π
π‘ Monday: Ben joined the Bright Blue panel at the Conservative Party Conference -
βCan homegrown electricity deliver clean, secure & affordable energy for the UK?β
With Andrew Bowie MP, Charles Hendry, Prof Jim Watson, Josh Buckland & Diane Banks.
Huge thanks to Bright Blue!
Itβs been a busy week for Electrify Britain! β‘
Our Director of Policy & Advocacy, Ben Westerman, has been out and about, contributing to key conversations about Britainβs energy future.
Hereβs what we've been up to π
#ElectrifyBritain #Electrification #CPC2025
Rebalancing policy costs across fuels could:
π· Save heat pump users Β£182/year
π Save EV drivers Β£64/year
π Time to stop penalising cleaner choices
π Time for levy reform
π Time to #ElectrifyBritain - fairly
#ElectrifyBritain #Electrification
Govt schemes are nudging families towards gas - not cleaner, electric options.
π₯ The βspark gapβ - difference between electricity & gas prices - is the highest in 2 years
β‘ Electricity is 4.19x more expensive than gas
Weβre penalising people for going green.
The βSpark Gapβ is widening - and itβs holding Britain back β οΈ
β
68% of electric meters in Britain are smart
But look closer:
β Only 39% of non-domestic meters are smart
π₯ For every 1 heat pump (ECO), 2 new gas boilers go in
π 0 EPC recs for heat pumpsβ¦ 121K for gas
π The road ahead:
We must:
π Electrify vans & HGVs faster
π‘ Expand smart charging
π Help households cut charging costs
The momentum is real - letβs keep driving it forward.
For people. For the economy. For the planet.
π electrifybritain.org/state-of-ele...
β οΈ Whatβs holding us back?
β οΈ Just 1% of HGVs are electric
β οΈ Vans are also lagging
β οΈ Only 49% of home chargers use smart tariffs
β οΈ Smart levy reform could save EV households Β£64/year
Weβve come far - now we need to go further.
ππ Electrification is spreading:
β
Buses & rail making progress
β
Smart tariffs save drivers £££
β
More affordable EVs entering market
β
Home charging is mainstream
But some vehicles are still behind. π
πβ‘ Britainβs EV shift is real:
β
22% of new cars sold are electric
β
Β£901/year savings with smart home charging
β
1M+ home chargers installed
β
EV price gap down to ~Β£10k
β
65% say EVs outperform petrol/diesel
β
Just 3% would go back to ICE
Letβs dive in π
At Electrify Britain, weβre making solar + storage more accessible, affordable & rewarding - because the UKβs clean energy future depends on it.
π Letβs keep the momentum going.
π Dive into our electrification tracker: electrifybritain.org/state-of-ele...
π· The benefits are clear:
Households can save up to Β£1,092/year
Batteries (~Β£10k) typically pay back in ~10 years
87% would recommend solar to friends
βBut 63% still say upfront cost is the biggest barrier
π Installations are accelerating.
Solar installs jumped 88% in just 3 years
At the current 36% annual growth rate, weβre on track to hit 9M installs by 2030
And itβs not just panels...
π Battery installs rose 131% in the 1st half of 2025 vs last year (18,000 systems!)
π Solar is surging in Britain - but can we keep the momentum going?
Over 1.8 million homes now have solar panels - thatβs 20% of the 2030 target. A few years ago, this felt distant. Now? We're catching up fast.
π electrifybritain.org/state-of-ele...
We donβt need new tech - we need better policy.
π Cut electricity costs
π Make clean heat the obvious choice
Time to stop subsidising fossil fuels and start building a truly electrified Britain.
#ElectrifyBritain #EVs #SolarPower
Whatβs holding heat pumps back?
1οΈβ£ Govβt schemes like ECO still fund 2x more gas boilers than clean heat
2οΈβ£ Electricity costs ~4x more than gas
The result? Clean heat looks expensive - because it is. Policy isnβt matching uptake goals.
#HeatPumps #EnergyPolicy
ποΈ "The problem isnβt the tech - consumers who switch love it. The problem is electricity bills."
Our Policy Director Ben Westerman joined Times Radio to talk about electrification in Britain.
β
EVs & solar are thriving
β οΈ Heat pumps? Still hitting major barriers
Thatβs why we launched the State of Electrification Tracker - full of data on heat pumps, EVs, solar, and public attitudes.

To speed up adoption, tackling cost is key.
Our analysis shows a 50:50 rebalancing could save:
πΈ Β£182/year for heat pump homes
π Β£64/year for EV drivers
Fairer bills = faster electrification.
π Heat pump installations have tripled since the Boiler Upgrade Scheme launched - proof that smart public support works.
But weβre just at the start of the journey. π
This tracker is built to inform, inspire & drive action.

β
Reflects real consumer sentiment

β₯οΈ People love electric tech - higher satisfaction than fossil fuels.
BUT cost is still the biggest barrier (for 1 in 2).
Fixing levies could help:
π· Β£182/yr saved with a heat pump
π· Β£64/yr saved for EV drivers
β‘ First findings are in:
π 1 in 5 new cars sold is electric
π 1.8M homes have solar - on track for 9M by 2030
π¬ Just 3% of EV owners would go back to petrol/diesel
π₯ Heat pumps? Still way off target - 59k installed vs 600k/yr goal
π¨ The State of Electrification Tracker is now LIVE! π¨
Weβre launching a new tool to track the UKβs shift to electric tech - EVs, solar & heat pumps.
