These kind of days I’m hardest on myself. Didn’t even hit the gym.

Advice that I was given before is walk away, get your mind off of it and go at it fresh the next day.

It’s ironic what made me a top performer in the military and private sector is also what it feels like it absolutely destroys me.

One of those days where I spend 12 plus hours on a problem and I wasn’t able to solve it. This will irk me all night, it might keep me up and probably will hunt me until it’s solved. I feel like crap, but I also reached out for help.

I’m still in the beginning of my #pythonprogrammming journey due to my $dayjob, but here is something I’m learning about. I love dicts, but dataclasses are recommended.

I’m barely at the DSA portion of my Python journey.

My job is to help make my team (Security Incident Response) be as effective and efficient as possible. if I can make the software engineering team that reviews my code be as smooth and easily digestible when reading my PR, I should have a higher chance of shipping code which in turn helps my team.

1. Send PRs in smaller chunks. I usually send PRs in bigger code chunks that get complex and bogged down in administrative task (review, corrections, discussions, etc). Smaller PRs was suggested in the book.

2. Ship everyday. I usually work in long iterations before I submit a PR. Look above

Being an Incident Responder (Security) acting as the team’s sole Software Engineer, reading The Software Engineer’s Guidebook by @gergely.pragmaticengineer.com has been indispensable to me. I want to help my team with software engineering projects and a few things I’m taking away asap:

I stopped adding random people and only connect with people I know personally or met in person, upped my privacy on there and noticed most of my noise has been filter down to my interest. Not that I log on all that much, but it’s cool to keep up with people I know.

Is it worth it? Depends I guess.

Lazy self-installing Python scripts with uv I frequently find myself writing my own short command-line scripts in Python that help me with day-to-day tasks. It’s so easy to throw together …

There's one thing I've been REALLY enjoying using uv for: writing standalone #Python scripts that require third-party dependencies.

I stick this in the top of the file and it just works! πŸ‘‡

#‍!/usr/bin/env -S uv run --quiet --script
# /// script
# dependencies = [
# "openai==0.27.2",
# ]
# ///

Working in Python daily at work while scoring a 96% in my CompSci class in you guessed it, Python.

I’m able to actually implement what I learn in class in the real-world almost in real-time.

Feeling pretty good right now

You are right, I should dive deep into projects in parallel to my next book. I always been hesitant about project work in Python because I work in it day to day, but I just realized not actually what I’m studying. I work on needs of the business. Thank you for the insight. I’ll report back =)
