This is skin-crawling bad and morally upsetting in service of a cause I'm broadly on board with, but it won't be that long until we get AI animations of the victims of crimes being asked to speak as the dead for all sorts of things, facsimile paraded as truth, machine output as divine seance. No, no

The dead have a right to remain dead. An animated skin put over a computer model and given the same name as the dead son of grieving parents is a cursed golem and a full delusion. By interviewing the computer model, Acosta has asked us to accept this as true or real. Gun control deserves better.

the USA built a system of higher education so good that smart/rich people from across the world came here, spending billions to learn here, subsidizing education for Americans while spending money to live in our cities and towns. our government arbitrarily decided we should stop doing that

It’s a very basic point. Good, more or less unquestioned economic data is like the instrument flight panel for the economy. For policy makers, markets, biz decision makers. Acts like these inject systemic and fundamental uncertainty at all those decision points.

The NYT's Gaza Tempest Inside The Times, frustration is mounting as critics weaponize an update to a Gaza starvation story to cast doubt on its reporting and the broader humanitarian crisis.

"Starvation is real and happening in Gaza and the attacks over this photo and the editors’ note are just the latest instance that we have experienced where truthful, independent reporting gets weaponized." www.status.news/p/new-york-t...

Is Mark Zuckerberg flip flopping on open source AI? During Meta's second quarter earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg further acknowledged there could be a shift, though he downplayed the significance of it.

A year ago, Zuck pubbed a diff memo saying "Open Source AI is the Path Forward" today he said "safety concerns" might prevent superintelligence from being open source.

San Francisco is a car city now. Sorry The city is embracing an identity it claims not to want.

San Francisco has been a transit/feet/bikes kind of city since cable cars ruled the Earth. But now transit use is down while car use is back to pre-2020 levels. It's not inevitable, but when cars get dominant in a city, they tend to stay dominant—a vroom loop.

Journalists covering the aid air drops say they have been warned by Israel not to film Gaza from the air or the air drops will stop. (Do they not want us to see the scale of the damage?)

An unbearably sad statement from the Editorial Committee (SDJ) of the AFP news agency, please read:

Since AFP was founded in 1944, we have lost journalists in conflicts, some have been injured, others taken prisoner. But none of us remember witnessing colleagues die of hunger".
