100 years ago today, #OTD in 1925, Edwin Hubble announced that Andromeda and other spiral nebulae were definitely separate galaxies outside the Milky Way, in a paper read to an AAS meeting by H.N. Russell.
There was no doubt that the Universe was more than just our little island of stars. ๐งช ๐ญ โ๏ธ

THE MAGNETIC LIMIT OF MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS Starting with Maxwell's equations \nabla\cdot E = \rho \nabla\times E = -\frac{\partial B}{\partial t} \nabla\cdot B = 0 \nabla\times B = J + \frac{\partial E}{\partial t} we can take the magnetic limit and get \nabla\cdot E = 0 \nabla\times E = -\frac{\partial B}{\partial t \nabla\cdot B = 0 \nabla\times B = J

Maxwell's equations are invariant under Lorentz transformations. The usual equations of fluid flow are not! Like the rest of Newtonian mechanics, they're invariant under Galilean transformations like
t' = t, ๐ฑ' = ๐ฑ - ๐ฏt

There are plenty of other resources as well. If you like video lectures then please let me know I shall direct you to that as well. Once you are more familiar with the basic ideas, then I'll be happy to recommend more advanced books.
All the best! ๐
1. Special Relativity and Classical field theory by Leonard Susskind.
2. Spacetime physics by Taylor and wheeler (this has many interesting problems).
3. Feynman lectures volume 2.
4. For GR, you may wish to go through Sean Caroll's Geometry of Spacetime.
5. Space, time and Relativity by Wald
I am so happy to know that you are going to grad school for physics! It is always best to review the subject, especially when it comes to something as subtle as relativity. I have tons of favourite resources, but here are a few I really liked!
27.12.2024 15:01 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A new claim that dark energy isnโt necessary, we just need to properly account for inhomogeneities in the universe. Maybe. But his idea has been discussed for a long time - David Wiltshire, an author here, has been pushing it for 20 years, and others have also looked at it. (1/n)
