Was thinking about this for another reason. It's that politics is very very easy to cover as a news org cutting costs. There is a public figure who has a real connection to your audience, and another one willing to pile shit on them. Which I think explains why everything is political now.

Yea, it's certainly not what people experience. Including things like white goods, which are purchased rarely, and often not at all by renters, skews it quite a lot. It also doesn't account for changes in utility and durability really.

The weird but about this particular story, is that it makes the 'I just paid him for tax advice' claims of some investor types seem a tad less outrageous. I mean, still immoral if not illegal, but i guess feasible that's what it was for.

My employer uses a learning portal, and since it seems I will be using AI in the near future. I thought I'd see if they have any courses. Amusingly, the learning portal also has AI built into the search, which makes it nigh on impossible to access the courses.

a second weird effect is that I never need notes from the main thing. But I bring my actual notebook with me in case I get something juicy from the chat after. Which I then feel I need to sneak off to secretly write in my actual notebook. (Because that needs to be in chronological order)

Now I have a cupboard of moleskin notepads with some extinct banks logo on and something like 'my trousers are getting tight, must eat better' on the first page in shorthand. So they're much too empty and nice to throw away. But much too corporate and weird to use for anything good.

A weird conundrum of being a financial journalist is constantly going to briefings from banks where they offer you a pretty good branded notepad. Often just at your seat. Feels weird to not use it but then take it. So I usually write like one line of gibberish shorthand.

Not entirely convinced that GDP growth is especially English, nor that that is down to any reason to leave England rather a huge continent of resources to use. The US is made up of equally as many Germanic and Irish emigrants which says a lot as an English former colony.

Depends on your views on what you think of being good at being English is, and whether you think a can-do attitude is more important than couple of continents worth of natural resources I guess. I have heard Australia still has Woolworths though, so who's to say?

I mean. I don't want to teach the guy US, or just really basic world history. But in a good 300 of the 400 years he's talking about there. The people weren't leaving England. They were notoriously taking England with them. For like a good 30+ years of the remaining bit, we had a lot going on.
