a brown wire-haired pup stands on a wooden deck in a grassy yard. he looks at us with golden eyes and his right ear flipped inside out. he has a pipe-shaped stick in his mouth, giving him the appearance of a sophisticated and dapper gentleman. just give him a deerstalker cap and a cloak, and he'd give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money.

This pup found a stick shaped like an old timey pipe earlier today and has already solved three mysteries. 13/10

So happy to hear my friend Yagmur Karakaya has a new publication out (and so timely, too): "The Global Rise of Populist Nostalgia: Lessons from Collective Memory"

Looking for alternatives to Mills for my Intro class, and am going to try a short essay from Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass called "The Gift of Strawberries." In talking about the gift economy vs. property economy, she sketches the two-way relationship between humans and society!

An excellent article on resisting AI in schools:

β€œIt took software developers in an METR study who used AI tools 19 percent more time to do their work. Nevertheless, because they expected to save time, they believed their work had been sped up by 20 percent.”

then you review them as a class, and facilitate the conversation around how to go about bringing those things to reality. it's also interesting to work with students who resist the activity even tho they are clear about who they admire and why. it can expose some important blocks to surpass

I like this idea, and then I tack on the "dream CV" exercise. so students look to someone they admire who is 5-7 years ahead of them, and study what their path has been. then they write their own cv w/ pubs, positions, grants, etc. that they want as if they've already happened

Just realized it's the first year since '22 that I won't be setting off in April for field work in Europe. Feeling so so grateful that Yale and the Macmillan Center sponsored my research. Studying the ways people imagine nationalism, citizenry, and religion thru tourism is more important than ever!

Opinion | The Democratic Party’s New Recruiter Has a Theory The Democrats’ best chance to constrain President Trump is retaking control of the House in 2026. Here’s how they might do it.

Interesting story on Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado. His political performances capture the sacrality of both left and right audiences (e.g. gets AOC's praise, stands up to Biden, and is a former soldier with a Bronze Star).

I'm being reminded today that friendship is such a tonic amidst all the chaos. One friend wrote me to ask if I'd read their book draft. Another wrote me asking if they could read my thesis. In a world where everything that is meaningful can be discredited as cringey, embrace πŸ‘ your πŸ‘ friends.

I'll miss it too. It's such a reversal from 2016 when WaPo was a light in the darkness. I recall being so moved by The Post when it came out around that time, too.
