I think i get this, but now haven't you smuggled "is identified" in there? As in: The duty holder with regard to this aspirational right must exist, we just haven't found them yet.

The defer-ers and grovel-ers also seem to develop this false impression of the object of their deference. I suppose otherwise they'd have to feel shame over the obscenity of it all.

this is like the british version of the new American claim that "my political views (which are that I'm a nazi) should be a protected characteristic".

There are signs plastered on hallway walls about what bullying is, what to do if you see someone being bullied or are bullied, etc. The adults actually seem to care.

I was born in 1980, and Im amazed at the atmosphere at my 9 year olds public grade school. I never hear her talk about stuff that was routine in my grade school--name calling, kids ganging up on weak kids, fistfights (I was involved in more than one, and I was voted nicest kid of the 5th grade!)

The story is harrowing and also heartening. I am so happy that she really heard you and found the strength to be sober. As the child of an alcoholic (who is past my anger about it) I sympathize with the whole situation.

I hadn't known till I bought my kid a Calvin & Hobbes collection that my version from the hometown paper had cut out the opening frame, which makes it clear that mom is cleaning up in the kitchen while dad is back on his bs with the kid out front. Nice framing with gender dynamics.

Was Kent State's student body really fairly conservative? I am from northeast Ohio, and am surprised to see the place, and its young people, described as fairly conservative, though it's true that Kent is not Cleveland. Am I missing something?

Horrible headline. There is no immigration crisis!!!! The shooting does deepen our fascism crisis though.

Those were not common sense reforms. Common sense tells us that people primed for violence and told they have "absolute immunity" are going to keep escalating and kill again and again. We the people are outraged and grieving. You need a moral voice. Abolish ICE.

I know this is how all academic writing is. But it feels particularly stinging and obscene when we wont let ourselves get back to: okay, but this is still true.

Writing in my field is like clawing my way back to: okay, but this is TRUE. And I don't want that struggle to appear too much on the page, because that obscures what I am trying to do. But I can hear all the voices from the field in my head driving me insane with quibbles and objections.
