Sadly “the next few weeks” is, if anything, optimistic. These are the kind of things that often accelerate. People are rightfully enraged and increasingly mobilizing, and on the other side you have the regime cheering on the violence.

ICE killing #AlexPretti should remind you of police killing #PhilandoCastille. Both men had concealed weapon permits, did not draw their guns, & were killed in Minn. These homicides are the price of unaccountable policing. These deaths are variations on the same fatal theme.

A fellow 37-year old Federal employee who dedicated his life to serving the American public. And ICE executed him for it.

ICE just executed another American for peacefully exercising his rights. I feel sick. For the people who’ve lost their lives for even passively challenging this administration. For the families split up by deportations. For the millions more forced to live in fear. This must end now!

And obviously the figure that emerges as the real protagonist is Kriemhild, and the more important themes involve gender.

It would be reread the story with more of an eye to the details of the two men’s relationship. Although I really don’t know enough about sexual norms in pre- and early Christian western Germanic culture to contextualize a lot of that.

Although in this case Siegfried isn’t killed directly by Gunther, and a euphemistic reading of that sets up an interesting irony between why and how he died.

I might need to reread the Nibelungenlied in light this episode. It’s another case of a story that at least starts with an extremely close pair of men that ends with one dying from being penetrated from behind with a lance in his only vulnerable spot.
