Nearly all of these women, here and elsewhere, said that they kept waiting — for years — for things to get better, assuming that some day, after they’d paid their dues, they’d magically pass through a portal into the healthy occupational satisfaction their (senior men) advisors enjoyed decades earlier. Yet many of us eventually realized that such jobs no longer exist in the academy. There are no secretaries to competently and expeditiously manage quotidian administrative tasks, no wives to type up the manuscripts, and more “talent management” and “student success management” and “course management” software to “automate” those tasks (by which I mean: dramatically increase human workloads through responsibilization and technical dysfunction). Adjunctification has played a key role, too.
