Phenomenology Friday

Our friends from The Relentless Picnic are back together to wonder about the capricious, the unconscious, the uncomfortable, the vulgar, and the bluntly offensive ways in which we are always already bound up in interpreting our being in the world. Not for the delicate of heart.

Americans think everyone is corrupt

Voters have weird views about this, and progressive advocacy groups do a lot that's counterproductive.

So will the party pay a price for Trump's corruption? They're set to lose the House, which almost always happens to the president's party during a midterm, but remain the odds-on favorites (1) to hold the Senate, in which case Trump will be able to keep MAGAfying the judiciary and getting away with corrupt schemes.

🚨 NEW EPISODE ALERT 🚨

let's dive inside the mind of a wolf, explore the possibility that spoken communication is kind of a trick, and ask: what's the source of the overwhelming evil we feel as a component of the truck we're driving?

oh and also β€” the most unhinged piece of audio we've ever put out

11.02.2026 18:09 β€” πŸ‘ 15    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

the goofily smiling face I've drawn in sharpie on my toaster is raising hard questions about the nature of selfhood.

but it suggests that we broaden our understanding of happiness. it probably even means it likes toasting things. because of how smiley the face on it is, if you look at it there.

10 years ago they told us AI and self-driving cars were going to wipe out up to half of all jobs. They didn’t.

But while everyone was talking about whether they would, companies rolled out algorithmic management and used digital tech as a pretext to reclassify workers as contractors.

new @relentlesspicnic.com available now, for free.
this episode is about music β€” how we mishear it, how we can be sure we hear it at all, how a demon can take hold of you and use you to produce it, and how sometimes instead of music there's the mass-market autobiography of a beloved '90s actor.

why do we tolerate ridiculous subject matter illiteracy in technology reporting?

what we can say is that this very question is posed in s7e10, back and forth between don and the realtor charged with selling the place. we know about don that he both adamantly thinks the outside reflects the inside, and also knows intimately how that's all a lie. so.

What’s also great is reading the dialogue with Claude where it stops and says β€œI need to stop and be honest with you about something important” and reveals it deleted every single photo. Software built for dunces

Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.

A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:

Hot Honey Snack Wrap | McDonald’s
YouTube video by McDonald's Hot Honey Snack Wrap | McDonald’s

I think it's completely fine for mcdonald's to use the late strains of a 2-year-old charli xcx banger, for no fucking reason at all, underneath a series of ads where brian cox hawks "hot honey sauce". I am not pulled menacingly into the abyss every time I see one. my heart rate is steady and normal

when today I started getting gemini email summaries in my personal gmail on android, despite having opted out/turned off AI in every which way, I was led to this setting.

my employer has gemini turned on. that bottom option is some absolutely insidious shit. unchecking removed it. fuck off forever
