Integrating Pollen-Based Assisted Migration and Rolling-Front Landscape Breeding
The IUFRO Working Party 2.02.05 organised a webinar series featuring leading experts, scientists, and practitioners. This series offers valuable insights into the breeding and genetic resources of Pacific Northwest conifers, highlighting cutting-edge research, practical experiences, and future directions in the field. By bringing together diverse perspectives from around the world, the series aims to foster knowledge exchange, strengthen collaboration, and inspire innovative approaches to the conservation and sustainable use of these important forest genetic resources. This webinar series was kick-started with an invited talk from Prof. Milan LstibΕ―rek from the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague on the topic "Integrating Pollen-Based Assisted Migration and Rolling-Front Landscape Breeding for Forest Adaptation under Climate Change". In #drylands, plants don’t grow randomly β€” they self-organize into disordered hyperuniform patterns that help them use water wisely & endure extreme aridity. A beautiful hidden logic of nature, revealed in a new @pnas.org study doi.org/10.1073/pnas... including #Maestrelab alumni

"This is a cross section of a bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) tree that grew along a creek in northern Missouri 3,950 years ago. It has 190 tree rings which provide a valuable record of yearly climate information from the time when it was growing. Environmental conditions such as historical droughts and late spring frosts are preserved in these rings. Oak wood is typically brown, but turns black over thousands of years when buried in waterlogged conditions with little oxygen."

I recently visited my alma mater, the University of Missouri. This is part of a display on the science of dendrochronology (the study of tree rings), located in the agriculture building. See alt text for information from the sign.

These results mirror the sparing-sharing debate in conservation, and with similar results. It's better to intensify forest production in some areas while leaving others alone than to have low-intensity systems. 🌏πŸ§ͺ🌳🌲
