1 of 2) "Bugonia" blends horror, science fiction & satire that (for me) worked. I don't know if it would have made Rod Serling proud, but maybe M. Night Shamalan or Jordan Peele. I don't know if I could have written this because some of the scenes had me squeamish and I'm fine with most horror.

I can only run in so many directions: John Muir at night, Octavia Butler and PK Dick mornings over Earl(y) Grey, and "poppy" Bradbury at noon? #Ilovereading ... but I can't write 3 books in my trilogy simultaneously any more than I visit all potential parallel realities while making a good deep dish

As an #author, I'd rather have "too similar" than "didn't move me." I mean, Roxane's a great essayist, (better than I), but is "too similar" harsh for a short story collection, which by itself is no small feat? Would she levy that criticism about "The October Country" or "Bloodchild?"

Sounds pretty cool to me. Sadly, I can't draw that well - just lots of wild, bizarre, exaggerated, cartoony creatures stalking around looking for mischief.

I don't really look at it that way. I try to first see a "big picture" and then the characters start to show up. I think that answers your question. Have you read "One Grain of Sand" yet? Or listened to the audiobook? The novel might answer the question in broad strokes.
