Was the woman killed by ICE today โ€œan innocent, wonderful, incredible womanโ€ who โ€œwas murdered at the hands of someone who should have never pulled the trigger of his gun," or is that kind of presidential comment only reserved for insurrectionists? Asking for a country.

I donโ€™t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make whatโ€™s happening now look like childโ€™s play. And people are disappearing.

Over and over again, Republicans show us they prefer money and power. They donโ€™t care that millions of people will lose health insurance or that children will go hungry.โ€œWill the richest among us become richer and will they give me some of it?โ€ This is what they ask. This is how they vote.

Greg Abbott deployed the National Guard to San Antonio, when he could have deployed the Coast Guard. โ€˜Cause everything went peacefully (as expected) at the protests, but we need boats to get to work due to crumbling infrastructure and heavy rains.

San Antonioโ€™s election showed people-powered campaigns prevail. Rolando Pablosโ€™ Campaign relied on racist, sexist rhetoric (+ sky planes & PAC money) to rile up an electorate, while Gina Ortiz Jonesโ€™ Campaign knocked on doors & built a diverse coalition. You show up for people, they show up for you.

That dude & Greg Abbott-aligned PACs spent upwards of $1.5 million to buy the mayorโ€™s seat in San Antonio, & they were trounced by a grassroots campaign for a first-generation, lesbian woman of color veteran. San Antonio, Texas just said pretty clearly, โ€œThis is who we are,โ€ and thatโ€™s cool as shit.

๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’ซ Sharing rainbow memes on your timelines is one way to show allyship. Voting for policymakers who see us as humans is a better way. In this sense, Iโ€™m a one-issue voter: you must believe in my inherent rights and worth as a human to earn my vote. In San Antonio, vote Gina Ortiz Jones for mayor.

Really putting that Abbott cash to good use!

He put tariffs in place due to a โ€œnational emergencyโ€ before heading out to a golf tournament during said emergency. Congress could stop this today. If Republicans would put people overโ€ฆgolf tournaments.

While #SanAntonio has a City Manager form of government, our elected officials set priorities through a multi-billion dollar local budget and hold the power of the bully pulpit. We need people who will look at data, ask critical questions, and make decisions that uplift San Antonians. (2/3)

I may be tired and a little hoarse, but as I said again and again on the Senate floor, this is a moment where we cannot afford to be silent, when we must speak up.

**pulls up soapbox, gets on it**
If San Antonio media outlets spent half as much time on *who* is running for elected office as they do on how *no one knows* whoโ€™s running for elected office, weโ€™d have a more informed electorate.
**screams into the abyss, steps down from soapbox**

I want elected officials who bring SA to DC direct flight energy to affordable housing, true living wages, and better roads and sidewalks with ample street lighting. Thatโ€™s how Iโ€™m calculating my vote in San Antonioโ€™s municipal election on May 3.

When a random ass bookstore from a city Iโ€™ve never been to or hardly visit finds their way into my feed, you can bet Iโ€™m gonna follow them. โ€˜Cause if I do find myself in their city, you can also bet Iโ€™m gonna visit and buy books.

To watch San Antonioโ€™s elected and appointed leaders cave so quickly is unsurprising and disappointing. And to watch the coverage of this closure fail to interrogate their talking points is also hella disappointing.

The rage that stems from this administrationโ€™s desire to create fear and chaos lives alongside the pride in community for pushing back so hard that they had to rescind their bullshit. It shouldnโ€™t be this hard, and I wish our elected leaders had as much backbone as our community leaders.

Bad Takes: Mayor Ron Nirenbergโ€™s defense of San Antonioโ€™s failure to aid poorest residents flunks the test Nirenbergโ€™s progressive grandstanding has frequently stood in contrast with the city's less-than-inspiring governance.

My grandma was prolific, full of lessons and good sense. She died before my 11th birthday, and at 46, I still rely on the wisdom she imparted. One of her best: โ€œNot everyone else can always be the asshole. But there are a lot of assholes out there.โ€ In short, check yourself and trust yourself.
