A democracy is where people vote for their representatives who serve for a limited time. This does not guarantee freedom in itself but it usually does a better job in doing so than a dictatorship, absolute monarchy, oligarchy etc

Monarchies can be democracies. Just like republics can be dictatorships. The only difference is whether the head of State is there by hereditary right or not.

That explains many things.

I know why it came about and that it no longer applies. It is just an example of the gvt's unlimited power on people's personal lives. Less democracy means less freedom. If that is what you like, good for you then.

That is exactly my point. To them it doesn't exist. Also, China is not a democracy and they can even decide how many children people should have.

But they are not going to strip Chinese citizens of their citizenship if they don't give up their us citizenship.

In the Chinese example, they simply do not recognize your other citizenship which is different. As for the 'standard practice in other countries' you have mentioned that is not true at all in EU countries.

How about people who are born with dual citizenship because of their parents and are natural-born citizens in both countries? There are millions of people in that kind of situation.
