Text which reads: βYβknow, boys,β came a rasping, slurred voice, βitβs real rude to point guns at our talent even if they do whoop your ass till the crack turns sideways.β Bubbles the clown stepped out from between the trailers, still half in his smeared makeup, a beat-up hunting rifle slung lazy in his arms. The grin painted on his face made his eyes look harder than they ever had before. The smell of rotgut 'shine held fast to him. His ginger curls were pressed to one side of his face, where Jamie guessed the clown'd been half in the bag already when the fight broke out. The old man raised the barrel and leveled it at Trapper. βNow, why donβt you be the good ole boys I know y'all are and take your drunk asses home?β Trapper froze. For a second, the world held its breath. Then he spat, clumsily holstered the gun in the front of his jeans, and stumbled backward, muttering curses that sounded half like prayers. His friends followed, limping toward the road. Jamie hoped he blew his own dick off. Bubbles kept the rifle trained until they were gone, then finally lowered it. βYou good, cowboy?β Jamie nodded once. βYeah.β Bubbles studied him. βYou sure? You look like you just went twelve rounds with your own shadow.β Jamie forced a smile that didnβt reach his eyes. βGuess I did.β
