The naturalist Jane Goodall died today at 91. Hope, she argued, is not merely “passive wishful thinking” but a “crucial survival trait.” Revisit a conversation with Goodall, from 2021: nyer.cm/F55JtsS

In their rebellious adolescent years, Guayaquila gracilicornis treehoppers sport garish stripes and spikes, before maturing into more stately and traditional thorn bugs.

Communism is a socioeconomic ideology, like capitalism. It is not a form of government. You can have a democratic communist govt (people control the means of production) or a fascist communist govt (centralized state controls the means of production). Who controls means of production in the US?

The "mean" in "Greenwich Mean Time" actually means "mean" (like, average). I did not know this!

To calculate GMT they took the position of the sun throughout the year and averaged it out to find the average solar noon in Greenwich and based the time on that!

Not that the internet needs more photos of monarch butterflies, but they’re just so pretty. Here’s my favorite stage, the chrysalis, with its golden ornamentations. The other image shows the fully grown caterpillar as it enters pupation. Woodstock, NY.

Watching animals eat is like my biology crack. I don’t need it, I don’t have to do it, I don’t even always like it, but there’s just something about critters noshing on one another that leaves me gobsmacked. And nothing does it like the comb jelly Beroe [Thread 🧵]

Each spring, a hidden spectacle unfolds when subterranean citronella ants (Lasius subgenus Acanthomyops) bring their mutualistic mealybugs (the large fluffy white thing) up under rocks to warm up. Here, the prolific mealybugs produce vast numbers of nymphs (the small purple things).
