My nationalism is different to the nationalism you'd find on the other side of the border because we exist in a different political system and our political aspirations are different, but it's also different to that of other Welsh people (even some who share my political ambitions)

But there is so much nuance here that a lot of people ignore (deliberately or through ignorance). Even words with established meanings are not black and white because language shirks away from that absolute binary and political systems are different from one side of a border to another

Just interesting how even within one country a word can have vastly different and acknowledged meanings in a wide political context. There's been a general push to try to conflate them, to align Welsh nationalism with the right wing populism of english politics and of course it can have parallels

I call myself a nationalist as in "believes in self determination for my country, wants independence" but an english person calling themselves a nationalist would be much more sinister. Words like this can adopt an entirely different meaning based on which side of the border you're on within the UK

One time I called myself a republican online and a bunch of Americans started tearing into me for ruining their country and I had to explain that I am from Wales and meant republican as in not a monarchist and thinking about how even basic words like this change context massively based on location
