Likes Spielberg, history, books and that bit in The Apartment where Jack tells Shirley how many drinks he's had. Hopeless romantic. Lost cause idealist. Quixotic fiasco. Once got lost in his own museum.

Went to see the Cosgrove Hall archive at my local library yesterday. There really is something special about being able to say I live five minutes down the road from Count Duckula. Stuff of childhood dreams.

Finally watched the Stranger Things finale last night. Very typical of what the show became: bloated, focused on scale. But it largely does stick the landing. Kinda hard not to feel a twinge of emotion during the Heroes end credits and also realise just how many iconic moments the show gave us.

Saw Hamnet today. Not entirely sure where the rave reviews are coming from. Ends brilliantly and it looks stunning, but there's a lot of Big Acting and at least one crushingly awful scene. Still much better than Tron: Ares, which I've just watched and... well, wish I hadn't.

Ride Away: Spielberg, War of the Worlds and the End of an America Era In his 2005 take on War of the Worlds, Steven Spielberg takes inspiration from John Ford and The Searchers to portray the end of an American era and the fading of a breed of American hero.

If you've just watched The Searchers on BBC 2, here's a piece from a few years ago about how Spielberg's War of the Worlds trades on Ford's classic, particularly in THAT ending, which isn't as happy as it seems

Cruise is a fascinating figure. More interesting artistically than many are willing to give him credit for. Sadly I thought the last two MI movies were weak because they positioned him too cleanly as the movie star. Like you say, he's best when he plays against it a bit.

Cruise chasing after his eyeballs is a key scene in Spielberg's career. Thematically rich for a film that talks about perception but also brutal slapstick of the highest order.

It's fascinating what Spielberg did with Cruise in Minority Report (and, to a lesser degree, WOTW). Hire a handsome A-lister at the peak of his powers and spend the entire film disfiguring and debasing.

Caught up with Zemeckis's Here, which is thought was fantastic. The digital imagery doesn't always work, the concept doesn't always convince and the finale overeggs the pudding, but the mosaic quality of it all really worked for me. Moving in quite unexpected ways.

Talking Pictures - Jaws Celia Imrie dives into the BBC’s archives to tell the behind-the-scenes story of Steven Spielberg’s classic aquatic horror, Jaws.

Well worth watching the Talking Pictures episode on Jaws if you missed it on BBC4 last night. Great archival interviews and behind the scenes footage.

Some superb archival footage in that Jaws Talking Pictures on BBC4 just then. The BBC's little Jaws season this Christmas has been great. Close Encounters in 2027?

MacLaine legging it down the street at the end of The Apartment is still one of cinema's greatest moments.

Watched Last Voyage of the Demeter earlier. Pretty good all told. Alien with a Dracula? Works for me.

The best thing all Christmas was Jaws on Christmas Day. More classic films in prime time slots. There really is something special about communal viewing, even if you're not physically together.

Back when I was on Twitter, I put together a massive thread of my favourite Spielberg shots. When I deleted my account, I put them together in a little PDF so I wouldn't lose them all.

That doc is now on From Director Steven Spielberg:

Crazy stuff here. Check out how long it goes on for in the shot where Leo grabs Adams. Plus you can see that Spielberg shot the reverse so he could get out of the moving master, which he does. But he stays in these shots as long as he can so they can build. I'm sure it's better for the actors too

Can really recommend the Jaws 50 documentary on iPlayer. I knew the filming had been rough but didn't know how much it had affected Spielberg
