Opinion | Let Students Finish the Whole Book. It Could Change Their Lives. Had they merely read the summary, my students would have seen many of the same words, but they’d have lacked the feeling part.

This article captures the most current approach to teaching English Language Arts -snippets, excepts, and quantity over quality. The curriculum my district uses is the perfect example.

However, when teacher autonomy is taken away (via a canned curriculum), student choice in how learning happens becomes lost.

The importance of kids choosing their own reading books can't be understated. I've always said that if improved test scores are the goal (& it seems to be) then we need to have kids read more.

So maybe fewer 'programs' and more student support in finding books and the time and place to read them!

Finding answers to fix the literacy crisis The reality is that there are problems at home, problems in schools, and problems in society that are making it harder for kids to be reading.

"And experts say that's the key to find ways to get your kids to fall in love with reading"
This is always my advice, find a book that shows reading can be enjoyable!
Sometimes it takes trying a bunch of books you don't finish and THAT'S OKAY!
