Gen X too. Tried to explain to my students that the most i want from authority figures is benign neglect & they were so confused. What do they know? They like their parents.

Same here, although my mother would deny everything. I was punished for "talking back." I still talk back to authority-- now I call it advocacy.
But yeah, we get along ok as long as we have most of the continental us between us.

Also, national merit scholar, PhD, Fulbright. The spanking & slapping had nothing to do with it, other than motivating me to do well in school so I could get out of there.

Oh, yeah, I was spanked with some regularity, usually by my dad (good ol' Christian patriarchy). I didn't mind the spankings as much as the random face slaps from mom.
We neither spank nor slap our kids. It's important to me that they know they are loved & respected.

I teach at a D3, & the number of football players (especially) who think they're going to go pro is nuts. We've had one guy do this-- in regional league arena football. Stop waiting for the call from the NFL & do your homework!
