homoquartz Follow i've warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises. as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it's just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we're small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, "i'm not here to hurt you. here's something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we're on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i'm being light-hearted and non-threatening right now." small talk isn't to get to know a person. it's just a greeting to affirm you're buddies in the universe. i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it. the owl shit When I was a kid and would go hiking with my dad and sibling on vacation, every time we would pass another group, my dad would do the smile and nod and "hey". And then after we'd turned a corner, he would say more quietly, "I must make friendly social noises so they do not eat my young" and my sib and I would crack up laughing. Gotta remember that we're mammals under it all.

leveled up with this explanation, cos as an autistic person i pride myself on reacting appropriately to animals, to signal harmlessness, so why wouldn't i want to do this for human animals?

[ Ul'dah — Emerald Avenue ] Thancred Waters accompanies a young Minfilia Warde down Emerald Avenue, near the place where a runaway goobbue caused the death of her father, Warburton.

Minfilia gasps, stops, then looks down at the ground, crossing her arms defensively about herself. Thancred turns toward her, a look of protective concern across his face. He reaches out a comforting hand and offers, "Come, we can turn down Ruby Road and go through the—"

Minfilia, though still unable to look up, frowns and interrupts in protest. "No," she snarls, more at herself than at Thancred. "This is absurd. I should bloody well be able to walk down any street I choose. I but need... encouragement." She looks up at Thancred plaintively, and he smiles and produces a lute. After a moment's consideration, he improvises: ♫ O come ye wayward daughter, ♫ Bereft of hearth and home, ♫ Beneath yon gilded gate there lies ♫ A market for the bold. It is a rewording of the anthem of Ala Mhigo, Minfilia's homeland.

Minfilia, comforted and perhaps even amused by the gesture, smiles tearfully up at him, and appears ready to continue. They resume walking toward the gate to Sapphire Avenue, as Thancred improvises a second verse: ♫ Raise up your heads and voices, ♫ Let fill your hearts with pride, ♫ Upon the dusty cobbles we ♫ Stand strong and unified.
