might be my dumbest take yet but: my belief that people are (on average) generally good (despite evidence) used to come easier but it's increasingly feeling like i'm holding onto it desperate with both hands like a fool getting mugged for their empty wallet. still not letting go.

saw a person walking a dachshund and a pair of borzois (or greyhounds?) and the dachshund was barking hard at everything but the two gangly dogs. sort of like a big chipmunk protecting two deer with its life. i am jealous of every creature in this story

i think it's nice that some medical centers in nyc will leave lockboxes outside with little stickers on them that say "medical samples only, no drugs or money" while they wait for pickup. goes to show that you can really trust the people of this city with your piss and blood

SONG

Is it dirty
does it look dirty
that's what you think of in the city

does it just seem dirty
that's what you think of in the city
you don't refuse to breathe do you

someone comes along with a very bad character
he seems attractive. is he really. yes. very
he's attractive as his character is bad. is it. yes

that's what you think of in the city run your finger along your no-moss mind
that's not a thought that's soot

and you take a lot of dirt off someone
is the character less bad. no. it improves constantly
you don't refuse to breathe do you

That the Trump White House tweeted out an image of a β€œGhiblified” deportation helps us answer the question. But even before they said the quiet part loud it was hard not to think of the final section of Benjamin’s essay when reading enthusiasts talking about how A.I. makes art β€œbecome accessible,” or β€œenables so much creativity”:

"Fascism attempts to organize the newly proletarianized masses while leaving intact the property relations which they strive to abolish. It sees its salvation in granting expression to the masses--but on no account granting them rights. The masses have a right to changed property relations; fascism seeks to give them expression in keeping these relations unchanged. The logical outcome of fascism is an aestheticizing of political life. […] 'Fiat ars--pereat mundus [let there be art, though the world perish],' says fascism, expecting from war, as Marinetti admits, the artistic gratification of a sense perception altered by technology. This is evidently the consummation of l’art pour l'art. Humankind, which once, in Homer, was an object of contemplation for the Olympian gods, has now become one for itself. Its self-alienation has reached the point where it can experience its own annihilation as a supreme aesthetic pleasure. Such is the aestheticizing of politics, as practiced by fascism. Communism replies by politicizing art."

Benjamin, of course, is thinking of war-obsessed Italian Futurists, in a different time and a different context. Sam Altman is no Fillippo Marinetti, and Studio Ghibli slop is no Abstract Speed + Sound. But you have to admit: β€œFiat ars--pereat mundus” would make a pretty good OpenAI slogan.

google ai search results claiming sunrise at 6:36 am, civil twilight beginning at 6:41 am, sunset at 7:03 pm, and twilight at 7pm

so this is just google ai search results are annoying and unhelpful volume 2,848,013, but i love the implication of day-long twilight. like the sun rises, then hides just under the horizon for twelve hours, then i guess pokes back up for three minutes and immediately sets again? good. relatable

every day someone on earth invents something. a strange little delight, an open-handed gift born of their spontaneity. but there are always detractors (just saw a guy at the laundromat getting yelled at by the owner for washing his clothes for free in the sink there)

24.03.2025 23:35 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

wild to me that we pay landlords like $25k, $30k a year and they'll still be like "no overnight guests. only one pet. don't go on the roof". for that much money they should be like "we will give you an extra cat if you want one. you get to punch me once whenever you want. i will do your laundry"

"only nba player who also won a heisman? charlie ward" i remember by "heisman = hockey = goalies = the concept of defense = ward". "the celtics won how many championships? 16" by "celtic knot = 4 by 4 = 16". etc etc. god help me

weird thing about competitive pinball is the rules you need to learn for as many games as possible and there's like 5000. fave example is NBA Fastbreak quiz minigame, for which I have permanently memorized a bunch of trivia about the 94–95 NBA season. i don't even like basketball

theory: you know how sometimes you're in the shower and halfway through a coin falls off you? tooth fairy related class action lawsuit just settled

and he goes on to make some other point with this, but i've been wondering what the opposite would look like, a shimmering of excess bad around something perfectly bad. all to say: today i saw a dog piss on a squashed, dead rat

bataille has this one essay i haven't read in a few years where he talks about halos, & it's like, perfect beings are portrayed with halos; if you remove the halo are they less perfect?, and the answer is no, the halo is like a vibration around the edges of perfection, it's surplus, it's excess,

Remember in the early days of the internet how it screamed every time we logged on? We should have paid attention to that.

we could have had a world where pullquotes were never invented & journalists looking to not deliver a solid rectangle would instead insert pictures of their pets

26.02.2025 00:37 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

makes sense, but i feel like the grabbiness is b/c it's an exciting line (you wouldn't pullquote filler) but it's a hollow grabbiness because it's missing the context. and by the time i'm reading it again the line is no longer exciting, it's boring, because i just read it like two minutes ago?

26.02.2025 00:08 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

i worked with journalists for eight whole years and only now have thought to ask: what's the point of pull quotes, exactly? did journalists see how filmmakers have trailers to spoil their work and get jealous?

imo "personable but professional" is the ideal tone. i don't know many front end devs or designers who are super stuffy people & they're ultimately who you're trying to sway

22.02.2025 21:51 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

+1. it's wild how many don't tailor. e.g. the role i mentioned is 50% svelte. wasn't expecting tons of people with practical exp w/ it but maybe only 25/1000 mentioned the word 'svelte' *at all* (including "i see this is a svelte role, i haven't used it but i'd learn it", which is a passing answer)
