Bridging the scales: what can microbial ecologists learn from classic ecology?
Beautiful new review paper in preprint bridging microbial ecology and classic ecology led by Maggie Vogel, @olimeacock.bsky.social and @annasophieweiss.bsky.social, also by @juliensluneau.bsky.social and @lambdapp.bsky.social from our lab (not me :)) ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

Motivated by some very kind reviewers, we also found that when populations are surviving in a metastable state before going extinct, their dynamics can be described effectively by a much simpler OU process, which promises easier ecological inference!

We see that deterministic control parameter for survival also plays a role in stochastic version. True to the spirit of statistical physics, probability to survive for different carrying capacities collapse onto a single surface controlled by rescaled initial abundance and distance to criticality!

Finite-size scaling of survival statistics in metapopulation models
Spatial metapopulation models are fundamental to theoretical ecology, enabling us to study how landscape structure influences global species dynamics. Traditional models, including recent generalizati...
