The culture of “move fast and break things” isn’t a moral failure or a governance oversight. It’s an ecological response to the conditions we’ve created.

In ecology, those are exactly the conditions that select for fast-life history strategies: r-selected organisms that reproduce quickly, burn resources, and invest almost nothing in long-term viability. If you look at the way today’s major AI companies behave, it’s hard not to miss the parallel.

Right now the AI ecosystem looks like fast colonization of a new habitat: resources suddenly opened up, competition intense, survival uncertain, and the whole landscape reshaped faster than anyone can track.

The AI safety conversation focuses on alignment, making powerful systems do what we want. But what if that’s the wrong question? What if the issue isn’t controlling one system, but cultivating healthy ecosystems?

Peer review can be painfully slow - taking months or even years to get papers published. When you have a paper that challenges an existing paradigm, or brings other disciplines to bear on a problem, peer review often fails.

Even if I spent the rest of my career trying to publish what I’ve written in these notebooks, there’s no way I’d get through all of them.

I started a Substack called Not For Peer Review. I’ve filled my notebooks with ideas, many of which have inspired my articles and books. But there are so many ideas that I haven’t published, and, if I’m being honest with myself, I know I will never publish through the traditional peer review system.
