Here’s an example of a local newsroom actually informing the public about AI (the role of journalism) versus the blatant AI boosterism we’re seeing many other newsrooms engage in to the detriment of the entire profession

Threatening to cut funding to someone because they disagree is a *real* threat to academic freedom of the kind frequently seen under fascist and authoritarian regimes.

This is also confected bullshit. There is no obligation whatsoever for a society or institution to invite a speaker.

It’s the only option. This is one of the 3 no-cost, short-term things the sector could do to stabilise itself - I wrote them up last year, but there’s still time! tacity.co.uk/2025/03/26/t...

My outside bet has always been that REF 2029 never happens. At a time of massive financial instability (including redundancies) around HE it simply seems like an obscene waste of money.

Even beyond the quality argument, these people aren't even 'writers', they're just assholes hitting what they think is the FREE MONEY button. Which sometimes works, so they keep doing it. If they gave even one solitary shit about art or even storytelling they would know better. They just don't care.

I hate this. I hate that scholars and teachers are supposed to be digital fraud experts. I hate that this part of their job description is becoming larger and larger. I hate the widening distrust. I hate a culture that aggressively devalues the curiosity and humility required for ongoing learning.

On this basis we would stop paying for free school meals for children and free bus passes for pensioners.

I don’t use it/don’t benefit is literally the direct opposite reason why we have taxation to fund pubic goods.

Education is a public good. Fund it!

Front page of Royal Historical Society blog post with image of the Berlin Holocaust Memorial, photograph by Rudolph Simon, 2013, Wilkimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0.

Text reads: "On Holocaust Memorial Day we need more history, not just more memory' and abstract: In this post, Andy Pearce – Director of the Centre for Holocaust Education at UCL – considers the current levels of knowledge of the Holocaust among UK secondary school students. UCL studies, in 2016 and 2026, reveal a troubling and enduring divergence between popular understandings of the persecution and murder of Jews in Europe, in the 1930s and 1940s, and the findings of scholarly historical research. 27 January 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of Holocaust Memorial Day in Britain. As Andy argues, prevalent and popular misperceptions risk being sustained if the Holocaust becomes a subject for remembrance and memory, rather than of history and historical scholarship. It is only though β€˜more history’, shared widely and publicly, that we may seek to redress error, distortion and denial."
