Assignment is due in 6 days. So far
83 students haven't clicked on the assessment folder which has the info
81 students haven't opened the handbook
140 students haven't opened the reading list
17 emails asking me what's the word count

It's the second hand anxiety on their behalf that gets me.

It's worked we've done together since 2020 and when I've pushed to expand it they've been silent.

The added complication in all of this is the personal connection. Like part of the wedding ceremony close πŸ™ƒ

After some digging it looks like it was submitted Feb 23, so it's been submitted and rejected, which is something I guess? But even now we are actively collaborating on other projects, just feels wrong.

Planning out research proposal, collecting data from a pilot, pushing collab who I consider a friend to pursue it further and how it will be an exciting project for us, and I've found out they've applied for a grant to research it without me. Completely blindsided by it and unsure how to address.

Getting an email at nearly 4pm on a Friday from a Journal saying "a decision about your manuscript will be made soon" is exactly the kind of anxiety inducing moment I need the least right now.

I can see this exploiting underfunded PhD students by offering money for research that would do well in much better journals but don't know any better.

I also completely doubt the author will ever see the money.

Junk science is cited in abortion ban cases. Researchers are fighting the β€˜fatally flawed’ work Researchers are calling for the retraction of misleading anti-abortion studies that could influence judges in critical cases

We must combat bad science & fraud because dodgy 'peer-reviewed' work is being used to give credibility to positions in high-stakes areas with real consequences.
The publishers who let in weak/fraudulent work with minimal scrutiny are complicit.

A social media ban for children would actually solve nothing. Here’s why Politicians are claiming social media apps are causing irreparable harm to our young. The science, however, says otherwise.

"Speaking as a parent, we all want our children to be safe, and years of newspaper headlines have suggested that social media is causing a children’s mental health crisis. However, the best scientific evidence we have so far simply doesn’t back this narrative" www.sciencefocus.com/comment/soci...

Help - My Survey is Full of Bots!
Dermot Lynott

Can you trust your own survey data? How can you tell if the responses are genuine or not? In this webinar I’ll talk about recent experiences of conducting online surveys, that were very quickly flooded with automated, bot responses. I highlight the different ways that we identified these bots, and provide some suggestions for how researchers can reduce the influence of bots, and ensure they are getting good quality data from their surveys.
