As the polls close, they’re “utterly convinced” Susan Hall has won the Labour Deputy Leadership election on a low turnout.

To be honest, she was never going to be a good candidate. Her acquiescing after the Hartlepool by-election in 2021, even when it seemed clear that Starmer was open to resigning and her base was secure, indicates that she doesn't quite have the same capacity as other possible figures to run.

If the 2028 Republican primaries go ahead as normal, I fully expect at least one candidate to openly call for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act.

Yeah, Polanski's conduct there is really questionable, but Wes Streeting is meeting with open Christian fundamentalists to discuss policy on trans rights. As much as it pains me to say, I have bigger concerns than Polanski's past as a hypnotherapist.

To be honest, I vaguely struggle to accept the notion of Plaid doing well in the Senedd and that only accounting for Conwy/Cardiff West in the general. But even that, let alone Reform sweeping here, is a damning indictment for Starmer and McSweeney.

If nothing else, remember that Starmer dipped by about ten points in the polls during the leadup to last election. Farage, for his myriad of flaws, is far more visible in the public eye than Starmer ever was, but that doesn't preclude an incompetent campaign pushing him down in the polls.

I don't even think he was *that* centrist socially - he supported leaving the ECHR! Certainly more moderate than what we have now, but that's more an indictment on our part than something laudable on his.

I'm not sure what an intervention into the Isles of Scilly will do, but it'd probably liven up the day, if nothing else.

I think a lot of people underestimate just how strong a position Plaid could be in rn. I don't think they're quite on the level of the 2007 SNP *yet*, but they can't be as far behind as people think.

I know me being Welsh may risk bias on this, but losing a region that's been supportive of the party for a century (even in the 1930s and 2019), not least to Reform and Plaid (and therefore to the left and right) really won't bode well for Starmer's national programme.

If the current polls hold in Wales and Labour are pushed into third place (and almost certainly made into Plaid's junior partner in a coalition), I really doubt Starmer will be able to survive the internal backlash.

There are worse candidates than Andy Beshear, but it doesn't escape me that his father was Governor through most of Obama's administration. How much of Andy's success is his own charisma, and not just being the head of a local political dynasty, is not a risk that eludes me.

He wouldn't be the oldest Prime Minister, sure, but Churchill and Gladstone were already established electoral juggernauts in their own right, and neither left Downing Street at the prime of their health.

If nothing else, he's got to be too old to meaningfully be Prime Minister, surely? He's not senile, but he's 75; as morbid as the thought is, it's not unthinkable that he could be incapacitated by 2029. I hope that the political left have a better possible leader than a PM who'll be in his 80s.

Scotland isn't immune from the hate that's gripped national politics. To act as though independence is salvatory is little more than sticking your head in the sand and does nothing for the tens of millions in England itself still facing the same crisis as before.

There are many ways to describe our mass transit system, but I think this is the first time I've heard it described as functional.

Eh, there is precedent for the Greens to be headed by one leader in the past - Caroline Lucas and Natalie Bennett did it for a few years. It's not a theoretical idea only now being introduced to the party by Polanski, tbf.

For what it's worth, Downing Street seems to have pushed back *hard* against Blair's comments earlier - I don't think they're going to remove him from the post just yet.
