Pagliacci goes to see Pagliacci. He's in the audience, but also on the stage. "Is this, fuck," he thinks. "Am I in a Lynch film right now. Am I in Mullholland Drive." Captured by confusion, horror, and strange, exultant sorrow, the clown must admit he is no longer depressed

I don't think The Silmarillion would ever work as a live action movie or series. Its true destiny is to be the nightmarish product of a Czech stop motion animator from 1979 that's only discovered in an attic years after its creator's death.

Please, can we stop doing prequels? Star Trek should be boldly going - not become a franchise about playing with our favorite scifi action figures & stories that have a destined predetermined outcome. Trek is about how the future is what we make it, not inevitable nor empty nostalgia.

As end-of-empire scenarios go it is so much more dignified to get your capital city sacked by the Visigoths than to have a bunch of illiterate rich people in their 70s doing it through a series of incomprehensible tantrums because their brains were defeated by their phones.

I'm never get over the fact that this administration's war on trans people is being carried out with the pretext of "protecting women and girls" while the president is a pedophile rapist.

On a long enough timeline, Lego will eventually make a set that is irresistible to you. That first satisfying little CLICK tugs a string in your amygdala. Before you know it, you find yourself suckin dicks for Legos in a back alley. The only way out is death.

if i were a pro-trump financial type i might view the destruction of reliable government data with the kind of anger and apprehension that might lead me to reevaluate my politics, but then if i’m a financial guy throwing my weight behind strongman rule, i’m already too stupid to breathe

Once again I've tripped the "You've Gone Too Far & Are Too Far Gone, Nevins" alarm.

In this case, it's starting to write--in an ttrpg, mind you--about the budget of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, how funds were raised who got taxed the most, and on what did the Empire spend the most money.

One of the most extraordinary things about the comics adaptation boom of the last 15 years is seeing the stuff I assumed was native to a niche hobby - hair-tearing about canon, event fatigue, impenetrable continuity - play out in the same ways at a vastly huger and more public and expensive scale

so when i publish x-men fanfiction, it's "copyright infringement," but when a racist, sexist, wildly transphobic ancient man with a terrible forum does it, it's a deluxe hardcover

By any reasonable metric the Wall Street Journal and its reactionary billionaire tyrant have done more meaningful “resisting” of this administration than the NYT, WaPo, CBS, CNN, or NPR.

And now I'm wondering about what true crime podcasts are like in the Marvel Universe, and how Millie Collins & Toni Turner's podcast "The Podcast With No Name" got eighteen episodes (and a People's Choice award) out of their coverage of Scourge's slaughter of costumed criminals in Medina, OH.

I’ve thought about this quite a lot. For some New Yorkers, this phrase refers to civil disobedience and protest, a call to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.

But I know for many Jewish New Yorkers, it brings to mind images of the like that you are speaking of. I was sitting with a rabbi not too long ago who told me how the same phrase is heard very differently by her and it’s heard as a reference to bus bombings in Haifa, restaurant attacks in Jerusalem. It engenders a fear in her and in others of those very attacks coming home here in New York City.

That distance between what some intend and what others hear is a bridge that is too far, and it is why I have not used the phrase and why I discourage its use. My focus is on building a movement for justice and equality, and as it pertains to Israel and Palestine, I think often of the words of Noy Katsman, who lost their brother in the horrific war crime of October 7th. Noy said we must believe in all life, Israeli and Palestinian, Jewish and Arab, that it is equally precious. That is the vision that I hope to fulfill.

It was just a few months ago that I met a New Yorker in Brooklyn who told me of how more than 80 members of her family have been killed by the Israeli military in Gaza. This is a devastation that many New Yorkers are feeling personally. It’s one that for others, they are witnessing on a day to day basis, and it continues until today. Just last week, NBC News reported that the Israeli military bombed a health clinic in Gaza, killing 10 children, including a 1-year-old who had just uttered his first words hours before. We are speaking of a place that is now home to the greatest number of child amputees in modern history.

What offends so many in this city is this horror is one that is subsidized by our country.

This is what mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani told @errollouis.bsky.social when asked about the slogan "globalize the intifada" and his position on Palestine. (When Mamdani said "images you're speaking of," he was referring to the Second Intifada.)
