The best way to learn how to #write is to READ. You can always learn a bit more about story elements by seeing what other authors do

Finding your #writing style is one of the most important things you can do as an author.

So many publishing decisions and successes hinge on the power and uniqueness of your author's voice

What compels you to #write? Where does your desire to craft stories come from?

If you're feeling stressed or everything about #writing is frustrating you right now, it's okay to take a break

You can always pick writing up again, why do you miss it?

No matter how tempting it is, please do not use AI at any point in the #writingprocess, AI will always add something glaringly bad to your story, and you won't always see it before you publish.

You'll also lose out on valuable experience in doing things yourself

I would say that's probably pushing it unless they're short stories.

I think the healthiest pace would be 1-2 finished (second draft) manuscripts per year. I'd be worried about split focus/ less quality work with anything more

Yeah, if you're going self pub it doesn't apply nearly as much. But I always encourage my authors to go trad pub, hence my recommended timeline

07.10.2025 20:18 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Here are the two major reasons why I think you should aim to finish your manuscript within a year:

1) The whole trad pub process can take YEARS

2) Publishers will edit your manuscript anyway

Your manuscript doesn't have to be perfect, just keep #writing

I can tell you why I am for my authors finishing drafts quickly: traditional publishing takes AGES.

You need a finished manuscript before you even query and querying takes a long time, so does being on submission. And then publishers take a year or more to publish your work.

Tip of the day: you don't have to write linearly!

#writing is hard enough when you have writer's block and daily distractions, if you have more ideas on writing chapter 20 when you're on 9, write 20! What's important is getting the words down

Just to clear some possible confusion, has the deadline already passed or do you mean September of this year, 2025?

Tip of the day: Limit the time you dedicate to worldbuilding. I know it's addictive to write down a rabbit hole, but for most #books, super extensive worldbuilding is not needed. Give yourself a week for the important stuff and move on

Comps are so important, especially for those of you who are #querying right now. Agents and publishers love to see strong comps that are doing well in the market, it makes them more likely to pick up your book

Tip of the day: don't wait for motivation to strike to start #writing! Keeping a steady schedule will get you much further than writing only when inspiration hits.

Take a beat, maybe a prolonged break to calm the inevitable frustration, and get back in there!

There's something to be said about changing your environment if possible as well

So sorry! Getting stuck, even temporarily, is super frustrating. Maybe taking a break or reassessing what things have been happening in your life recently can help you through this mental block?

Finding out what's causing it is usually the first step to resolving it. Hope you figure it out❣️

To all the authors #querying right now, please remember it is your VOICE as an author that catches the attention of agents!

Agents are readers too, and just like any reader they want to be compelled to finish the story. If you have a strong voice, you have a strong pitch

A bit of advice I give to all of my clients: Write like it's in permanent marker.

Too many writers write and then rewrite the same few sections of their manuscript over and over -- which leads to them not finishing it! It's not helpful so please; write now, edit later

Speaking from a publishing side of things, the skills it takes to edit are different than the skills it takes to write. Many big-time editors also have not written published books, but you'd still be better off listening to them on how to write better than a one-time published author

Rewriting previous work is a great way to hone your writing style! Try not to overdo it though❀️
