Wow! I genuinely thought this must be a joke, but the story โ see thread โ is fascinating and even has a sort of moral.

These look great
Although, it's easy to get suckered in by fancy "designer" cheese at exorbitant prices when nothing really beats a good cave aged cheddar a slab of Stilton, and a nice warm brie.

Dang, I should have known that. Been there plenty of times and always admired it. Took photos for DnD inspiration as well.

If someone says you must not have funt,
The chances are that person's a c***
Especially if he's old, rich, and orange,
And makes up words like covfefee or floringe.

I can't pretend it doesn't irk me that none of my titles ever makes these list.
What can I say? I am secretly self-centred and egotistical while maintaining a veneer of altruism. ๐

I started learning it. I got good enough to get muddled up and ask for "very beers" in a French cafรฉ, instead of three beers.
I could still just about cope in a restaurant in either language.

At bare minimum, they could put the link in the #AltText

This is why there should really be NO taboo words.
Not a hill I am willing to die on though. It's not worth the grief.

In my great-grandmother's memoir she talks about the whole family being at her father-in-law's bedside while he died. They sang hymns with him.

This is appalling.
People, human beings, should not be treated like this simply for being born in a different country. This obsession with stopping migration is inhuman. People have always moved around and should be free to continue doing so.

Oh, for sure. I think I would probably have failed abysmally, but then again, I come mainly from middle and upper class stock so I would be the one getting away with stuff.
My grandfather, as a youth, would break into empty houses and light open fires and cook food. Never got caught, lucky for him.

Whereas the wealthy could act brazenly and escape justice simply because it was excused as "high spirits" a "jolly jape gone wrong" or "all a big misunderstanding".
And if a poor person has to choose between stealing or starving then, both then and now, I think the real criminals are the rich.
04.08.2025 10:32 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Not so simple as it seems, to obey the law I mean.
Curious fact, "naughty" used to mean poor, because they had naught. But it changed meaning because poor people were "inately bad"; poverty was God's punishment for their wickedness.
So the slightest misdemeanour could result in arrest.
04.08.2025 10:32 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
I've never thought of it in that way either. I have only ever used a sensitivity reader to ensure I don't inadvertently cause more harm than good to a marginalised community out of ignorance.
If a writer needs a filter to hide their bigotry I think they should get a different job.
03.08.2025 22:10 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Yep. It's a hell of a shame that people don't choose to read books marketed to children and young adults.
Some of them are gems.
Maurice is another example by Sir Terry
I have a few in my own catalogue too.

Just an observation. The poorest cannot possibly pay a higher proportion of income tax than anyone else since they pay none.
They (we, I am one of them) still pay VAT which probably makes up a fair whack of their total income, but that's not income tax. Poor choice of words
03.08.2025 08:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
I can't think of anything, apart from the obvious boring self-promoting one of my own titles. But I am too polite to do that.
