Whenever he was asked how this single pair of shoes could last so long Ewing would only smile, with a twinkle in his eyes. Sportswriters assumed Ewing was being coy. But in fact, Ewing could not say. Literally. He could not form the words to explain. In his darker moments, Ewing thought of the deal he’d made with the strange slender man in a green tunic as a curse. But then he’d look down at the shoes and tell himself that it was not a curse. It was a charm.
