Officially 67,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza since October 2023, probably many more. 83% were civilian acc to Israeli military's own data - so 75 civilians killed every day on average. Yet media & political comment focussed overwhelmingly on 20 living Israeli hostages, 28 dead.

Appalled by this attack on a place of worship. Members of the Muslim community must be free to worship and live without the fear of Islamophobic violence and intimidation. I stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with British Muslims and against this hate. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Neither Palestinians nor Israelis will enjoy freedom, dignity and security unless the solution includes rights and justice for all. Perpetuating Palestinian suffering and subjugation is a route to further disaster. 9/

Third party states should not have anything to do with this absent radical, root and branch change. The aim must be clear - to have Palestinians in charge of their own destiny in Gaza and the West Bank, with no occupation, and no foreign colonial control. 8/

There is no clear endgame or horizon even for statehood. No commitment to Palestinian self-determination, national and human rights. There is no accountablity mechanism of any form. Above all no affirmation of Palestinian sovereignty over Gaza. 7/

The 20 points contain no guarantee or timeline of Israel withdrawing all forces from Gaza. There is no commitment to end its control of the air or sea. There is no reference to port, airport or safe passage to Gaza. Israeli will not be ending its 58 year old occupation. 6/

But beyond this, it actually reinforces the Israeli occupation and hold over Gaza, conveniently through proxy forces who will be an instrument of the occupation not a facilitator of Palestinian liberation. How come? 5/

If we get to a ceasefire, a release of hostages, both Israeli and Palestinian, & the entry of aid into Gaza at scale then this has to be seen as a positive. The genocide will be on hold and the famine can start to be addressed. 4/

So it is a diktat. It is not a done deal. It is not one that has been agreed by all sides. It excludes the Palestinian Authority, ensuring the West Bank and Gaza remind divided, a key Netanyahu aim. 3/

This is a surrender or die deal offered to Hamas. Take it and their leaders can live and leave. Amnesties are available but it would be disarmed and out of power. Refuse, and Trump was clear that Netanyahu will have total US support for Israel to β€œfinish the job”. Chilling. 2/

The Trump comprehesive plan for Gaza is anything but. It is not comprehensive, but dangerously vague. It is not a plan - but a series of points. It is not for Gaza or Palestinians but for Netanyahu. 1/

The world is looking on in horror as Netanyahu's Government plots to lock Gaza's entire population into effectively a giant prison.

The Prime Minister should make it clear that the UK won't stand idly by, starting by sanctioning Netanyahu himself.

It's utterly unconscionable for the Israeli Defence Force simply to blame a "technical error" for killing Gazan children waiting for water. The UK Government must insist on accountability within the Israeli military and Government and an end to a culture of impunity.

Letter from Calum Miller MP to Rt Hon David Lammy MP

Dear David,

I write to you following Tuesday’s reports that Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has instructed the Israeli military to prepare a plan to move all Palestinians in Gaza into a "humanitarian city" on the ruins of the city of Rafah.

These proposals are utterly abhorrent and, if realised, would amount to the forced displacement of the entire population of Gaza. Further reported details of this plan - including that Palestinians, once inside, would not be allowed to leave - are also, clearly, entirely unacceptable.

Does the Government agree that these proposals, if realised, would constitute an egregious breach of international law, and must be resolutely rejected in their entirety?

Last month, Liberal Democrats welcomed the Government’s decision to sanction the extremist Ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich.

It was only right that they faced consequences for their relentless calls for the forced dispossession of Palestinians, which have so egregiously undermined prospects for securing a just and sustainable peace in the region.

On 23 May, I wrote to you proposing that you consider sanctioning Minister Katz for his role in advocating for the aid blockade and the expanded military operation in Gaza. In light of these fresh proposals, I would ask that the Government now urgently assesses the case for sanctioning Minister Katz. They are only the latest proposals for dispossession which he has publicly advocated - including his support for the establishment of 22 new settlements in the West Bank in May on the basis that it constituted β€œa strategic move that prevents the establishment of a Palestinian state”.

When the Minister for the Middle East announced the sanctions against Israeli Cabinet ministers on 10 June, he said in his statement to the House β€œThis Government will never accept the unlawful transfer of Gazans from or within Gaza”.

Can you confirm whether your Department will expand the sanctions implemented against Ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich to Minister Katz?

These proposals once again bring into sharp focus the July 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. The intention of these new plans - to displace Palestinians from their homes - sits alongside the pattern of increasing settler violence and expansion in the West Bank.

When I wrote to you on 8 May, I asked whether you could confirm the timeframe within which the Attorney General will provide his view on this opinion. Can you reassure me that that opinion will be delivered before Parliament returns from Recess on 1 September?

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Calum Miller MP
Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs

The proposals from Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz to contain all 2.1m Gazans in a new compound are illegal and utterly abhorrent. I have written today to David Lammy asking him again to sanction Minister Katz, and to set out the Government's legal view of Israel's occupation of Palestine.
