The mine’s tailings dam failed catastrophically on Aug. 4, 2014, depositing 25 million cubic metres of mine waste into the Fraser watershed. It is considered one of the worst mining disasters in Canadian history.

Between 1962 and 1970, the Dryden pulp and paper mill dumped 9,000 kg of mercury into the Wabigoon River, just upstream from Grassy Narrows.
