A collection of abandoned self portraits. Three miniature practise paintings on card, two A4 practises with large brushes on art board, and two unfinished attempts on larger canvases.

Happy New Year all! Managed to actually do a self-portrait by the end of the year that I was happy with. It only took 10 months.

As you can see, there were quite a few practise runs and failed attempts, but I ended up with something big and different.

Grabbed my big brush recently and tackled an A4 size painting in the same way I do my trading card sized ones.

Here's Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill brining with emotion in oil paint.

The red tiefling Karlach stares out at you. There's a look of disgust on her face. Behind her is a purple background made up of loose brush strokes. Around the edges of her hair and face, little yellow flames appear.

Mommy Karlach looks at you with disgust.

I felt inspired to do some more Baldur's Gate characters, and really enjoyed how this one came together.

The slope winds its way along the bottom third of the painting, interspersed with green. On the left, the fields and woods in the distance are various shades of green. The top half of the painting is dominated by dark, stormy clouds on the left which lighten and give way to blue sunny skies on the right.

Special thanks to one of my older scuffed up brushes for all the texture in this one. Sometimes fighting the scale of the brush is worth it.

A painting of the final boss of Manaforge Omega, Dimensius the All-Devouring. The giant humanoid manifestation of darkness rests his right hand on the ground as he prepares to slam his left onto a band of adventures who stand tiny against his huge form. Behind him, pipes and metal frames channel purple and pink void and arcane energy. Those colours reflect off his bronze coloured armour, which sit like curling frames on his arms. Lights resembling stars glow within his body and a beam of light bursts from his chest, creating a rift in space in front of it.

The latest raid in WoW is incredibly good looking, so I had to choose something from it to paint. What better to choose than the final boss, the giant Dimensius the All-Devouring.

I even bought quinacridone magenta so that I could get some really vibrant pinks.

A painting of a path winding its way through a forest. The light is a late afternoon glow which pushes through the forest canopy. The path, a reddish brown dirt track takes up most of the bottom third of the painting, before disappearing around a clump of trees. It's loose and sketchy, and mostly reds, browns, yellows and greens.

Keskuspuisto in Helsinki is a wonderful place. The access to nature from the city was truly inspiring.

I also discovered a painter named Fanny Churberg on my trip there, and her art helped inspire this forest scene.
