It's also perfectly possible to have voting machines that count the votes as you are voting, and print out a paper ballot for confirmation.

Then the initial result is instant.

The recounts are done when people suspect the machines have been fiddled with.

In most countries the paper ballots are always hand counted. It also only takes a few hours, because we are well organized.

If you do a recount, yes. Then it takes long. Because it's a manual recount of the paper ballots.

Which is something you CAN DO! You CAN do a manual recount with paper ballots, to check that the result were not messed with.

With completely electronic voting, that is not possible.
