A photo of a device composed of two PCBs sandwiched together with a silicone keypad in the middle and poking through the front PCB. The keypad has an ortho layout with most keys of a PC keyboard. It also has some extra colorful macro keys at the top. There is a Solder Party logo on the Meta key as well as in the middle of the top row. The silkscreen reads "KeebDeck Basic, arturo182, Solder Party". The two PCBs are held together by four Phillips-head screws.

The wait is finally over, we're happy to announce that the KeebDeck Keyboard and our first product using it, the KeebDeck Basic, are now available for sale from our @lectronz.com store! ⌨️

Open Science and Epistemology with Haris Shekeris - Part 4 Part 4 of my conversation with Haris Shekeris, and is the last in this series. Haris and I wrap up our conversation about epistemology, democracy, open science, how people work together toward a common goal, and what Haris envisions as a potentially better system for all these things. I have found Haris to be a very open-minded person, who is interested in discussing these topics, and many others. Please reach out to him if you would like to discuss these ideas more.

We're coming down the home stretch of OpenCTD version 8, the finest DIY oceanographic instrument ever made. A few final hardware validations and I'll be ready to launch.

This update has been entirely supported by Patreon. Help us make the tools of ocean science accessible to everyone!

Is the conductivity sensor the most expensive item in the parts list? All of the ones I've seen are very expensive.

Oceanography for Everyone

The OpenCTD can be built for as little as $400 (I know, it used to be $350, tariffs are really hurting the small technology fabricators) and can be built, calibrated, and maintained by the end user.

Open Science and Epistemology with Haris Shekeris - Part 3 This is part 3 of a conversation with Haris Shekeris. This episode will make the most sense if you listen to part 2 first, but it can be listened to stand-alone as well. Haris talks more about democracy, gives his “elevator pitch” for why democracy is important, talks about the importance of transparency and active participation, and explains the “democratic moment”. This conversation was recorded via Jitsi, and there were some technical issues leading to things like echo and a few drops during the conversation. Those have been cleaned up as much as possible and my hope is that it will not detract from the information being shared by Haris. This conversation was originally recorded in the summer of 2024.

Designed and rendered a measuring scoop using #build123d and #blender respectively. The user inputs a target volume for the measuring scoop, and then scipy traverses the search space and finds a scoop with the matching volume. There is a lot of potential in this kind of design optimization approach!

An aside: journalism exists in an attention economy where demand drives editorial decision making. If you find something you enjoyed, learned from and that moved you, share and share widely -- even four days late. I, and others, don't get to keep doing this stuff if no one reads it.
