Annie Harper, a psychology professor, said that the current climate could be an opportunity for things to be better than they were before, not just better than they are now.

“There are so many of us who have been activated by this experience,” she said.

Wickersham said the impact of funding cuts on his patients was turbulent.

“There was chaos at the time that they were terminated. Our first and primary concern was our study participants and how we would continue to support them"

Jeff Wickersham, a professor at the School of Medicine who researches ways to treat HIV in LGBTQ+ communities, with an emphasis on treating transgender women and people experiencing addiction, said that all of his five National Institutes of Health grants were terminated but eventually restored.

Elumn noted that the grant covers a large percentage of her salary and its termination left her feeling uncertain about her future. Elumn’s work is also “deeply personal” to her, she said. “My partner who was incarcerated died in 2020 and I wrote this K in kind of the aftermath of that experience."

Johanna Elumn, a professor at the School of Medicine, spoke to the issues her research — on the health implications of mass incarceration — has faced amidst these cuts. Her grant was terminated in July, she said.

HoSang expressed disappointment with Yale’s response to the cuts.

“There is just something jarring about our institution declaring unqualified commitment to academic freedom, and then watching project after project fold simply for political reasons,” he said during the event.

Keene explained that the danger in these grant terminations is that “they’re really a form of censorship.”

Professors lament federal research funding cuts at faculty panel The Yale chapter of the American Association of University Professors held a virtual panel Thursday featuring six faculty members who have been affected by President Donald Trump’s cuts.

“We... wanted to address a frustrating narrative we’ve been hearing more frequently—that Yale has somehow been exempted from the funding freezes and disruptions affecting other institutions,” HoSang wrote... “The idea that Yale has been untouched is simply wrong."

"And it purports to do all this, even though the Constitution is quite clear, the government cannot impose any of those limitations on freedom of expression," he said.
