Agents zip-tie kids in new immigration crackdown in Texas At least three children were taken into custody and zip-tied at the San Antonio Immigration Court.

In San Antonio today, plainclothes ICE officers (not masked this time) arrested, handcuffed, and zip-tied a family of five (yes, ALL of them, including the little children) coming out of their immigration court hearing — which ICE had just had dismissed.

I wrote this piece nearly a decade ago—about a kid I avoided at an after-school program, and what he unexpectedly taught me about presence, failure, and what it really means to be a neighbor.

Back then, I thought showing up meant fixing things. I’m still learning that usually it just means staying.

Yes, this is a post about immigration once again. But hopefully, like most of my writing here, it’s also about truth, proximity, and what we learn when we stay close enough to see what’s real.

For now, I felt the need to respond to a video that’s been circulating widely—because its claims aren’t just misleading; they’re dangerous.

Immigration is one facet of caring for our community—but there is so much worth exploring: housing, public health, education, belonging. I want to get more personal, and create space for others to do the same. I want to talk about art, and all the ways life is enriched when we build community.

This is a Holy Week reflection about grief that stays with us, and wounds that never heal.

This is happening at the Bluebonnet detention center in Anson, TX and appears to be in DIRECT VIOLATION of the Supreme Court's ruling requiring notice "afforded within a reasonable time and in such a manner as will allow them to actually seek habeas relief."

It's been <24 hours.

What Do We Ignore? Our comfort often depends on what we’re willing to overlook.

That line from Small Things Like These stayed with me—and pushed me to write.
This piece is about proximity, comfort, and the quiet decisions that shape who we become, and who is left on the margins.

Wilmer only found out his son had been detained after receiving a phone call on March 15 from his nephew, Luis, who lives with them. That morning was their last time together; they had gone around the corner to do their laundry. Later that day, Wilmer said that his son met with a friend to get help with some errands at the American Red Cross. He learned this from Luis, who looked at the situation from inside the apartment: when his son was on his way back, just steps from his home when ICE agents stopped him. “The officers grabbed him and two other boys right at the entrance to our building. One said, ‘No, he’s not the one,’ like they were looking for someone else. But the other said, ‘Take him anyway.'” That moment marked the beginning of Wilmer’s search for answers — answers he’s still waiting for.

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind.

An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one."

The other said, "Take him anyway."

So they did.
